JOHN l MA It'llCNS, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO REDYVAY & BURTON,
()I SAME PLACE.
DESIGN FOR THE ORNAMENTATION OF COOKlNG-STOVES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 17,459. dated July 19, 1887.
Term of paicntlil years.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Beit known that I, JOHN F. LIAR'IENS, of Cincinnati, county of Hamilton, State of Ohio, have invent/c nd produced a new and useful Design fo the Ornamentation of Cooking Stoves and Ranges, which is fully set forth and described in the following specification and accompanying illustrations, forming part thereof.
The several features of my design consistin the adaptation to the'severalparts of the stove of thcgeneral features of my design, the whole forming a harmonious and complete design.
The several parts ofthestove thus decorated are the following: the front door, the panel under the ash-pit, the feed-door of the firechamber, the oven-door, the panels of the hot closet and reservoir at rear of the stove, the skirting between the feet of the store, the column between the stove proper and warmingoven, and the pipeshelf and accompaniments.
Figures 1, 2, 3, and 4 represent the several styles of stoves to which my design isapplied.
The general features of the design are best illustrated in'the oven-door and in the feeddoor of the fire-chamber. These doors are made in the well-known style of bonnetcd doors with rounded edges. The background s ornamented withsmall polygonal figures a in low relief, presenting the general appearauce of a scaly skin like that of the alligator. On the rounded edges of the door this scaly background becomes continuous with the conventional lines of water-waves b,within which are occasional flame-like figures d. The extreme edge of the door is decorated with more highly conveutionalized water-lines.b'. The lower edge of the door is not rounded, and is decorated with a line of inverted-U-shaped figures, c. The largest portion of the door is covered bya projectingpanel-frame, D, whose top is outlined by a triple curve, and whose upper portion is filled in with a. conventional leaf-pattern in open-work. The lower part of the panel is left blank to receive an orna-- mental tile. There also appears on the oven-door between the panel and the handle a conventional leaf and flower pattern, E, springing from a, horizontal ste e. The feed-door to the fire'chamber presen the same background, the same rounded edges with b b, the former being confined to the top of the door. In the middle of this door appears a cbnirentional front view ofan owls head, G, in low-relief. .To each side of theowls head, also in low relief, is a conventioualized twig, H, bearing berries.
The panel I below the ash-pit is raised, and bears no other decoration than the water-lines b b at the ends.
The bonneted panel J and door K of the hot closets at the rearof the stove are each decorated with the sealelike background. The upper panel, J, has the water-lines b b'at top, but only the waterlines b at the sides. The water-lines I also appear at the sides of the door K. The lower edge of the door Kis decorated with the inverted-U-shaped figures c. In the center of the panel J is an elevated annular frame to receive a decorated tile. The center of the door K is decorated ith a head, k, in front view, low relief, half in" half fiend, with conventionalized h trheard. I
When the warming-closet is omit d, t reservoirst the rear issupported on the brack P, which is decorated. with the alligator-skin background and raised scroll-work. When one or both of-the hot chambers at the rear of the stove are employed, the vertical columns R and 8 between the stove and the hot chamher are decorated. In the present design the column B is made into a rounded beading relieved by curved grooves. The column S is decorated with the U-shaped figures 0.
Below the edge of thestove proper, and extending from foot to foot on the four sides of the stove, I have placed the downwardly-projectingskirting L, having free edge below. These skirtings L not only complete the finish of the stove, and thus add to its general attractiveness, but they also form a good location for decoration. The particular decor a tion which I have used on these skirtings 1n ICO the present design is to cover them with the scale-like background used in the'otlier parts of the design, and to place in the center of the panel, in low relief, a conventionalized head, I, in front \'lC\\' partly surrounded by a convcntionalized wreath. At the ends ofeach of the skirtings L a convcntionalixed leaf design, I, is placed, which has the cflcct of joining more intimately the feet and skirtings.
In the larger sizes of stoves or ranges, as shown in Fig. 4, the pipe-shelf M is added. The pipe-shelf M is supported by a standard, which consists of a central standard, M, and lateral arms M The standard M is curved outwardly and has its surface decorated in general like the other surfaces of the stove. The background has thealligator-skin decora tion a and the highly-couventionalized waterlines I) at the sides, and at the bottom a modification of the invertcd-U-shaped figures c. In the center of the standard M is a frame, 112, to hold an ornamental or name panel. The panelm is decorated with flame-like figures m.
Below the shelf M the arms Maredccoratcd with conventionalized leaf pattern m,thebackground being as before. Above the shelf the arms M have the alligator-skin background and convcntionalizcd leaf pattern m at the ends. The standard M, above the shelf, is further decorated with the frame m, carrying an ornamental tile. Ateachsideof the standard M is a low shelf, N, mounted on a standard, N decorated with scroll-work, a.
