No. 16,876. Patented Aug. 24, 1886 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK A. MAGEE, OF CHELSEA, AND ANDREW GARBUTT, OF BOSTON, ASSIGNORS TO THE MAGEE FURNACE COMPANY, OF BOSTON, MASS.
DESIGN FOR A HEATING-STOVE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 16.876, dated August 24, 1886.
Application filed June 10, I886. Serial No. 204,806. Term of patent 14 years.
To a whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FRANK A. MAGEE, of Chelsea, and ANDREW Gsnun'rr, of Boston, both in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, citizens of the United States, have invented and produced a new and original Design for Heating-Stoves, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being bad to the accompanying photographs, forming a part thereof, in explaining its nature.
Theinvention comprises a design for heatingstoves, the essential or material parts of which are, first, the general outline of the stove; second, the character or style of the ornamentation or finish; third, the open-work doors, including the front feed-doors, the side doors, and the door to the ash-pit chamber; fourth, the especial form orshape of the front of thestove immediately above and below the entrancetothe combustion-chamber; fifth the shape and ornamentation of the rail and of the brackets which attach it to the stove; sixth, the shape and ornamentation of the base of the stove and of the stove-legs; seventh, the shape of the top or upper section of the stove, and, eighth the panels and studies or pictures in relief upon each side of the lower section of the stove.
- The photograph upon Sheet 1 is a front view of the stove. The photograph upon Sheet 2 represents in perspective the front and one side of the stove. The photograph upon Sheet 3 represents in perspective the back and one side of the stove. The views on Sheet4 show the side panels.
The stove, it will be seen from the illustrations, is rectangular in cross-section,has a rich ly-ornamented outwardly-extending base-section, which projects outwardly upon all sides of the stove, and an intermediate band upon the sides and back, which divides the main body of the stove into two sections, and an upper section or top, which is rectangular in shape, has rounded corners, inwardly-curved flaring sides and ends, is largerat its base than at its top, and has a projecting border at the top. The stove also has rounded corners, and is very richly and profusely ornamented with a design which, while varying in some of its details, is substantially uni form throughout the sides and back of the stove, and various details upon the front of the stove, in that the entire surface of these parts is ornamented with representations of leaves and fruit or lowers as upon the sides of the stove, and pine needles and cones as upon the hack of the stove. All the doors of the stove have the same characteristics-that is, they are open-work doors, and they are profusely and richly ornamented and in harmony with the ornamentation of the remainder of the stove. The panel study or picture A is well shown in the photograph on Sheet 4, and it comprises a a study which we have called Industry. It is a representation of a maiden at aspinningwheel in the foreground, a window partially draped beyond, and a child holding a kitten. This picture or study is formed upon one of the side plates of the stove, and is surrounded by a border of leaves and flowers. The second study or picture, A, is also well shown in one of the photographs upon Sheet 4. We have named it Cinderella, and it represents that period in her life when her sisters are dressing for the ball and she is sitting by disconsolate. The study is also inclosed or surrounded by a circular panel richly ornamented with representations of fruit and leaves.
The two front doors, A, of the combustionchamber are well repr'esented inthe photographs on Sheets 1 and 2, and each comprises two horizontal eross-bars,avertical bar dividing the door into spaces for the reception of mica or other transparent lights. Griflins, dragons, or other similar mythological figures are represented as supported by these bars, as interlaced with thcm, and holding them to gether.
Each of the side doors, B, is well shown in the photographs, and the essential features of each are the curved edge of the upper inner corners of the door and the division of the door into spaces or openings of irregular shape by richly-ornamented bars hearing or having ornamentations which harmonize with the characterizing ornamentation of its special side of the stove. The spaces within the door are adapted to receive mica or other transparent lights. The portion of the sides of the stove in which these doors are set are also well shown in the photographs, and they are each richly ornamented .with representations, in
one case of fruit and leaves and in the other case of leaves and flowers. They also have upper sections, comprising bar or scroll work of irregular shape, which form openings or apertures. This feature of the design is also well shown in the photographs.
lhe front section,G,of the stove is rounded or extended outwardly from the front of the stove, one part above the doors to the combustion-chamber, and the other part below said doors, and each partis provided with converging fluted lines or recesses. The upper part of the front section extends into the top section or part of the stove, and the lower part of the front section into the lower part,or to the hearth-plate.
The rail 0 extends across the front of the stove immediately above the hearth-plate,and is supported by a bracket at each end, which is highly ornamented with the prevailing features of the design. The rail and brackets are well shown in the photographs on Sheets 1 and 2.
The back D of the stove is well shown in the photograph on Sheet 3, and it is highly and profusely ornamented with a representation of pine needles and eones.
The general proportions and outline of the stove are well represented in the photographs on Sheets 1, 2, and 3.
The ornamentation of the top plate and the urn we consider do not form a material part of the design.
The front of the stove may be ornamented with tiles set in various places; but we consider that they do not form an essential feature of the design.
The door E of the ash'pit is made or composed of bars interlaced and highly ornamented, and it is well represented in the photographs on Sheet 1.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. In a design for a stove, the front door, comprising horizontal and vertical bars, spaces for mica or transparent lights, and griffins, dragons, or other mythological figures interlaced with the bars, as illustrated and described.
2. In a design for a heating-stove, the front section, 0, rounded or extended outwardly from the front of thestove, provided with converging iluted lines or recesses, and disposed immediately above and below the opening to the combustion-chamber, as illustrated and described.
3. In a design for a heatingstove, the side door, B,composed of ornamented bars dividing the door into spaces or openings, and curved upon its upper edge, as illustrated and de scribed.
