Description

DESIGN FOR A CUP AND SAUCER.
Design No. 13,845, dated April 10, 1883.
USiITED STATES THEODORE R. DAVIS, OF ASBURY PATENT OFFICE.
PARK, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO DESIGN FOR A CUP AND SAUCER.
SPECI FICATION forming part of Design No. 13,845, dated April 10, 1883.
1880. Term of patent 7 years.
T 0 all whom. it may concern:
Be it known that I, THEODORE R. DAVIS, a citizen of the United States, residing in the town of Asbury Park, county of Monmouth, and State of New Jersey, have invented and produced a new and original Design for Cups and Saneers, fully described and representedin the following specification and the accompanying illustrations, forming a part of the same.
The photographic illustrations represent the configuration and ornamentation of the cup and saucer, two opposite side elevations and a front end elevation of the cup being shown and a plan and edge elevation of the saucer. The configuration or shape of the cup approximates in form that of a section of the bamboostalk, and it embodies the conformation of parts of two contiguous joints. To this end the sides of the cup are curved throughout the body portion A, the curve from the edge or top being slightly inward and then outward as the base portion B is approached and joined, said base portion B being slightly curved inwardly to thobottom or supporting edge of the cup. The unionbetweeu the body portion Aand base portion B is indented in a somewhat irregular manner, as at G, to more clearly simulate the joint formed between sections of the bamboo-stalk.
The body A in this design has somewhat the contour or form of one section. while the base B has the contour or form of a portion of the next adjacent section of a bamboo-stalk, it being shortened in this shape or configuration to provide a proper base for the cup, and the indented portion U approximates in its contour and appearance to the joint uniting two sections of the bamboo-stalk. Thus a body having inwardly-curved sides that unite with a base having an inward curvature is fashioned to form a unique design. The essential elements of this shape or configuration are therefore a body, A, having a slightlyflared month and inwardly and outwardly curved sides uniting with a base, as B, whose sides have a slight inward curvature from the point of union with the body A, all substantially as shown; and though the point of union between the body A and base B is irregular, and shaped somewhat. like a flattened bend, such an indented union between these two parts forms with them an additional feature in the configuration or shape. The configure tion at this point of union, as C, may or may in the illustration. So, too, the edge of the base may or may not be provided with ornamental tracery.
The decoration or ornamentation of the cup consists essentially of the representation upon its body of a sprout of the bamboo, as 3, which is represented as starting from the joint or point C and lapping in an inclined direction about a portion of the body of the cup. It may, however, be given any extent and direclion without departing from the spirit of the design, so ion g as the characteristic feature of the representation of a bamboo-sprout lapped about the body of the cup is retained. It may be shaded with any color to more perfectly imitate the sprout of bamboo; but the color ing is not essential, though desirable.
That portion of the cup upon which the bamboo-sprout or a leaf or leaves growing therefrom are represented may be molded so as to project beyond the general surface of the body, thus presenting the same in relief, and thereby constituting a roundness of surface which will more correctly fulfill the configuration and ornamentation invented and produced by me.
The handle has the configuration and design of a. sprout of bamboo, which projects from the cup-body ata point near its edge or mouth, and from which sprout extends a leaf, that curves in bow-like form and joins the cupbody near its base. This sprout of bamboo is shown as terminating at the point marked 6, and in the precise embodiment shown is a continuation ofthe sprout of bamboo 3, constituting the body ornament of the cup, and the leal'extending from it is represented as sprouting from the point 7 and curling behind the sprout, turning downward as it passes the point 6. Said leaf is also shown as bifurcated as it approaches the point of union with the cup-body, so as to form in effect two spreading leaves, 1 2; but these modifications are not important.
The essential feature of the design for the handle is the representation ofa sprout of hamboo projecting a short distance from the cupbody, and a leaf extending therefrom and curved to unite with the cup-body, whclhcror i not have lines of tracery or shading, as shown.
not said leaf starts at or near the extremity of the bamboo-sprout, extends onto the body of the cup, or is bifurcated to form two leaves, and whether or not the said bamboo-sproutis represented as a continuation of the body-ornamenting sprout of bamboo. This handle may of course be shaded or painted with proper colors to more closely simulate the bamboo stalk, sprout, or leaf.
The saucer is in general form acircular body, with upwardly curved sides that constitute it a shallow dish. It is given a novel configuration or shape by raising its inner surface to form a rib,wall,orledge,0, curved to partially or wholly surround the central part of the sancer and to provide a walled spaceuvithin which the base of the cup may enter and be seated. This wall, rib, or ledge O delines the position of the cup in the saucer and acts as a guard, retaining the cup in a proper position to secure the most perfectzesthetic effect when the cup and saucer are associated for use. This wall, rib, or ledge is represented as a curved sprout of the bamboo, and may obviously depend upon the eontour or shape or upon proper coloring or shading to more nearly simulate the same. It is shown ashavinga lesser sprout, P, extending from one point, and has associated with it several leaves, as S; but such sprout P and leaves S may be omitted.
In the shape or configuration of the saucer the upwardly-projecting curved wall, ledge, or rib 0, partially surrounding the central cupspace, and whether formed of a single continuous piece or divided into several pieces, so long as the same may be seen when the cup is placed upon the saucer within said wall, ledge, or rib O, constitutes the essential characteristic of the shape or configuration of the saucer.
The essential element of the ornamentation of the saucer is the representation of a curved sprout of bamboo, substantially as shown and described, whether the same be raised from the surface, painted, or otherwise delineated thereon, and with or without the lesser sprout P and leaves S.
What, therefore, is claimed is- 1. The shape or configuration for a cup, consisting essentially of a body having curved sides thatunite with a base portion, the sides whereof are curved inwardly from the point of union with said hotly, substantially as shown and described.
2. The shape or configuration for a cup, consisting essentially of the curved body and base and indented portion, uniting said body and base, substantially as shown and described.
3. The design for the ornamentation ofa cup, consisting essentially of the representation u pon the body thereofot' asproutot the bamboo, substantially as shown and described.
4. The design for a cup-handle, the same consisting essentially of the shape, configura tion, or representation of a sprout of bamboo, substantially as shown and described.
5. The shape or configuration for a saucer, the same consisting essentially of the upward ly-prqiecting' wall, ledge, or rib 0, partially surrounding a central cup-space, substantially as shown and described.
6. The design for the ornamentation of a saucer, the same consisting of the representa tion of a curved sprout of bamboo, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
THEODORE R. DAVIS.
