DESIGN FOR A MINIATURE MONUMENT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 12,575, dated November 22, 1881.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, EDWIN U. BRUEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and original Design for 21. Miniature Monument, of which the fol lowing is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of two sides of my design, and Fig. 2 is a similar view of the other two sides.

My invention consists of a memorial monument in miniature, designed to commemorate the late James A. Garfield, twentieth President of the United States. it is made in imitation of a column or shaft resting on a base or pedestal, and, as shown in the drawings, it has a pyramidal top, a shaft having the form of a frustum of a pyramid, and an enlarged base, a portion of whose wallsis vertical, and a portion inclining upward and inwardly to connect with the base of the shalt. The different faces of the shaft, which, for convenience of description, are numbered 1, 2, 3, and 4, contain the following ornameutations and inscriptions: The top of the shaft has each face made with a triangular panel, and the sides of the shaft and of the upper portion of the base are also paneled. The side of the column or shaft designated by the numeral 1, and which is intended to represent the front of the monument, contains upon its panel the following inscription near the top: To the memory of below this, and about the center of the shaft,

there is a representation of a head of the late President Garfield, partially encircled by a wreath. Below this representation ofa head is the following inscription: James A. Garfield; born Nov. 19th, 1831, died Sept. 19th, 1881. The side designated by numeral 2 contains upon its panel the following inscription: The people, the people, my trust. The side designated by numeral Scontains upon its panel the inscription Honored and beloved by all, and sidel theinsoriptiou God reigns, and the Government at Washington still lives.

My design presents to the eye a miniature memorial monument especially adapted to perpetuate the memory ofthelate President James A. Garfield.

Instead of the inscriptions specified, other appropriate mottoes pertinent to the subject may be used.

I claim- A design for a memorial monument, consisting of a paneled shaft of the shape of a frustum of a pyramid resting upon a base whose upper portion ispaneled and inclined inwardly and upwardly, the panels of said shaft and base containing an in wreathed head of the late President James A. Garfield and suitable memorial inscriptions, substantially as shown.
