NECKTIE FORMER AND HOLDER.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, THOMAS H. NOONEN, a citizen of the United States, and residing at New Rochelle, in the county of VVestchester and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Necktie Formers and Holders, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to devices for use in connection with what are known as fourin-hand neckties or scarfs, and the objectthereof is to provide an improved device of this class designed particularly for use in connection with turn-down collars so as to avoid the necessity of passing the tie or scarf around the neck, and on which the tie or scarf may be easily and conveniently formed or tied and which may also be easily and securely connected with the collar and collar button and will remain firmly in the desired position.

The invention is an improvement on that described and claimed in U. S. Letters Patent granted to me April 23, 1907, No. 851,430, and said invention is fully disclosed in the following specification of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a front view of my improved necktie former and holder; Fig. 2 a sectional side view thereof; Fig. 3 a view similar to Fig. 1 and showing the first step in connecting the four-in-hand tie therewith; Fig. 4 a view similar to Fig. 3 showing another step in the process of connecting the tie with the former and holder and tying the said tie; Fig. 5 a view similar to Figs. 3 and 4: but showing the process of forming and tying the tie on the holder complete, and;Fig. 6 a view similar to Fig. 1 but showing a modification.

My improved necktie or scarf holder is composed of spring wire, and in the practice of my invention I take a piece of spring wire and bend it centrally to form a U-shaped loop a which opens downwardly, and the end portions of which are then bent to form two oblong wing-shaped members (F, the bottom side portions a of which are inclined downwardly to the loop a, and the top side portions a of which are also preferably Specification of Letters Patent.

solder or in any desired manner and the v pointed end 0 of the pin is preferably bent forwardly as shown in Fig. 2. All these parts of the construction are similar to the necktie former and bolder described and claimed in the patent referred to except that in said patent a ring or loop in the plane of the shield 6 takes the place of the pin 0.

In Fig. 3 I have shown an ordinary fourin-hand tie (Z except that with my improvement I prefer to use a tie which is of the same width throughout its length, and in connecting a four-in-hand tie with my improved former and holder one end portion (Z of the tie is passed up through the former and holder back of the shield 79 and pin 0 and in front of the loop a, and said end portion (Z is brought down in front of said shield and the pin 0 is passed therethrough, and the end portion (Z of the tie is pulled down and passed around the part (Z of the tie and around the pin 0 to form a loop (Z as shown in Fig. 4, after which the end portion (Z of the tie is again passed around the loop portion d as shown at (Z in Fig. 4, after which said end portion (Z of the tie is passed forwardly over the top of the holder and over the loop (Z and down through the loop (Z and is drawn tight as shown in Fig. 5, and this completes the formation and tying of the tie.

In the construction shown in Fig. 6 the shield b is omitted and the end portions or finger pieces a of the wire, from which the former or holder is made, are brought together and secured together, and the end portion of one of said pieces is projected to form the pin 0 and the operation of this form of device will be the same as that shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and the process of tying a tie thereon will be the same as that hereinbefore described and as shown in Figs. 3 to 5 inclusive.

The substitution of the pin 0 for the ring shown and described in the patent referred" to is a great advantage, by reason of the fact that said pin securely holds the end portion (Z of the tie and will also hold the end portion (Z of the tie and will prevent said tie from slipping upward after the tie has been completely formed shown in Fig. 5; and by means of this construction the width of the completed tie at 0 may be made much less than when the said ring is employed and a smaller knot or tie, and a more neat and finished result produced.

When the shield b is employed as shown in Fig. l the date of the patent and any suitable advertisement may be placed thereon, and in practice the wing or loop members a are bent backwardly to conform to the curve of the neck, and in placing the device on a collar the said wings a are inserted up beneath the turned-down end portions of the collar, and the bottom portion a of the device is forced upwardly and the loop a caused to engage the shank of the collar button, and the spring tension of the device securely holds it in position.

In the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the shield 7) forms a depending arm or member which projects downwardly in front of the bottom portion a and the loop a as clearly shown in Fig. 2, and the connected parts a in the construction shown in F 6 form a similar arm or central member, and

in both forms of construction this arm or member depending from the top of the de vice over the loop (4 serves to position the tie and to hold it in proper form.

A necktie former and holder composed of a spring wire bent centrally to form two oppositely directed loopshaped wing mem bers the bottom portion of which is continuous and provided centrally with a part adapted to engage a collar button, the top portions of said wing members being formed from the end portions of said wire and being connected and provided with a central part which is oitliset forwardly and which extends downwardly in front of said collar button engaging part and the lower end portion of which is provided with a downwardly directed pin.
