SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 599,326, dated February 22, 1898.

To all 107007 it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMES A. FLOMERFELT, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Necktie-Retainers; and I do hereby declare the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the same, to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.

The invention relates to devices for retaining neckties in place after being tied about the collar of a person; and its object is to provide a simple device of this character which may be readily applied to any and all sizes and styles of collar-buttons, and which when in position will not cause any inconvenience in attaching the collar and which when the tie is tied will hold said tie in position Without any danger that the retainer will become displaced or detached from the collar-button.

The embodiment of the invention shown in the drawings comprises a wire loop open at one side, so that said loop may be readily slipped over the shank of the collar-button and a second wire loop through which the tie may be passed in forming the knot, which loop is hinged to the former loop, so that it may occupy a vertical position while the collar is being attached to the collar-button and will be free to swing into a position at right angles to the button-loop when the tie is passed therethrough.

Referring to the drawings, Figure l is a front elevation of a necktie-retainer embodying the present improvements. Fig. 2 is an end elevation. Fig. 3 is a view showing the retainer in position before the ends of the collar are attached, and Fig. 4 is a view showing the position of the loop through which the tie is passed when the knot is being formed in said tie.

A is the loop for embracing the shank of the collar-button and is open, preferably, at the bottom, so that it may be readily slipped over said shank. The ends of the wire of which loop A is formed are bent laterally to form the extensions to a. The ends of the wire forming the loop B, through which the tie is passed, are bent inward, forming the extensions h l) in line with the extensions (4 a. Sleeves c c surround the extensions c a and l) b, and these extensions and sleeves form a hinge for connecting the tie-loops A and B.

The manner of using the device will be readily understood from an inspection of Figs. 3 and 4. The loop A is passed over the shank of the collar-button and the ends of the collar are then attached to said button, the loop B being free to swing into a substantially vertical position, so that it will not interfere in any way with the convenient manipulation of the ends of the collar. The end of the tie is then passed through the loop B, as shown in Fig. 4;, and said loop will be swung on its hinge by the action of the tie in being formed into a knot, so that the ends 01 of the loop will engage the edge of the collar.

It will be seen that with this construction of retainer said retainer cannot be detached from the collar-button until the tie is removed and that the ends d of the loop B by engagement with the edge of the collar prevent any displacement of said retainer. These ends may be and preferably are curved, as shown, to embrace the edge of the collar, and thus prevent the disengagement of said ends from the edge of the collar. The tie will thus be securely held in position without any danger of becoming displaced.

4 That I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A necktie-retainer comprising a loop for engaging the collar-button,and a loop through which the tie may be placed, said loops being hinged together and said button-loop communicatin g with the tie-loop so that said buttonloop may be set down over the button-shank, substantially as described.

2. A necktie-retainer comprising an open loop for the collar-button having lateral extensions, a loop through which the tie may be placed having its ends hinged to the lateral extensions of said former loop, substantially as described.

3. A necktie-retainer comprising the loop A having the lateral extensions a a, the loop B having the extensions Z) I) and the sleeves o c surrounding the extensions a a and b h, substantially as described.

4. A necktie-retainer comprising the loop A having the lateral extensions a a, the loop B having the extensions 17 b, and the curved ends d d and the sleeves c c surrounding the extensions (1 a, and b 19, substantially as described.
