To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMES S. HOLCOMBE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Nashville, in the county of Howard and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brooms, of which the following is a specification.

My invention has relation to new and useful improvements in brooms and the main object thereof is to provide a broom that may be refilled with straw at home.

Other objects of my invention are to produce a device of the above nature that will be efiicient in operation, durable and one that may be manufactured at a small cost.

With the foregoing and other objects in view my invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as are described in this specification, illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming a part thereof and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

Reference being made to the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a broom embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical, longitudinal sectional view through the broom.

Referring more particularly to the drawings in which like numerals designate like parts throughout, my invention, in detail, is described as follows:

The handle 1 of the broom is received by the socket 2 of the jaw supporting members 3. Said jaw supporting members may be made separately or may be made integral with each other at their socket portion 2. Each member 3 extends downward from said socket 2 and terminates in a widened transversely extending plate 5, the outer ends 6 of which are turned inwardly, the plates 5 being joined to said socket by respective necks a. The inwardly turned ends 6 of one of said plates are adapted to be received by or fit between the corresponding inwardly turned ends of the opposite plate adapting perforations in said ends to register, which registering perforations each receive a rivet 7 which passes through registering perforations in the ears 8 of the jaws 9 of my device. Each of said jaws consists in a flat piece of metal which has provided at its outer edges adjacent its upper edge said ears 8. Thus it will be seen that each of the jaws 9 is adapted to swing upon the rivets 7 which extend through correspond- Specification of Letters Patent.

ing perforations 7 in respective ears 8 and corresponding perforations in respective inwardly turned ends 6.

Extending upward and slanting outwardly from the upper edge of each jaw 9 is a member 10, provided with a pair of ears 11. An L-shaped lever 12 is fulcrumed between each pair of cars 11, which levers are each adapted to bind against the outer face of a respective neck 4. When the jaws 9 are in clamping position they are in that position illustrated in Fig. 1, that is to say, the vertical members or arms 13 of the jaws are in vertical position and in contact with the outer face of their respective necks 3 and said socket 2. When the jaws are in open or unclamped position they are in that position indicated by the dotted lines in Fig 2, and it will be seen that when in this position, the L-shaped levers 12 are extending downward rather than upward, being almost exactly opposite to that position assumed when the device is in clamping position.

I have provided upon the inner face of each jaw 9 at the lower edge thereof a rubber pad 14, which may or may not be employed, as desired. I have found that it is not absolutely necessary to employ said pads as the jaws will clamp the straw 15 of the broom with sufficient firmness to hold it in place without the use of said pads.

Although I have specifically described the construction, combination and arrangement of the several parts of my invention, yet I do not confine myself to such specific construction, combination and arrangement of parts but reserve the right to make such changes therein as do not depart from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the claims hereunto appended.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

1. In a device of the nature described the combination of a handle, a socket therefor, a pair of jaw supporting members formed integral with the socket and extending downward therefrom, each of said members terminating in a widened transversely extending plate the outer ends of which are turned inwardly and overlapped, said ends being provided with registering perforations, a pair of jaws each provided at its ends near the upper edges with inwardly extending ears, the ears at each end overlapping and being provided with registering perfo-ra tions, a rivet at each end extending through the perforations of the ears and the inwardly turned ends, thereby permitting the swinging of each of the jaws thereupon, a projection provided with a pair of cars extending upward from the upper edge of each jaw, an L-shaped lever fulcrumed upon a spindle passing through perforations in the outer face of the neck of its respective jaw carrying member, when the device is in clamped position, said jaws adapted to ref ceive and clamp the straw of a broom.

2. In a device of the nature described the combination of a handle, a socket therefor, a pair of jaw supporting members formed integral with the socket and extending downward therefrom, each of said members terminating in a widened transversely extending plate, the outer ends of which are turned inwardly, said corresponding ends being provided with registering perforations therein, a pair of jaws pivotally mounted on said jaw carrying members and means comprislng levers to clamp sald aws 1n clamped position substantially as shown and described.

8. In a device of the nature described the combination of a handle, a socket therefor, said socket -provided with a air of jaw supporting members, a pair of aws adapted to swing upon said jaw supporting members, a projection provided with a pair of ears extending upward and slightly outward from the upper edge of each jaw, an L- each pair of cars, said lever binding against shaped lever fulcrumed upon a spindle passing through perforations in each pair of ears, said lever binding against the outer face of the neck of its respective jaw carryposition, said jaws adapted to receive and hold the straws of a broom, said levers extending oppositely or downward when the device is in unclamped position, substantially as described.
