SYRANS STANDISH, OF EUREKA, NEVADA.
IMPROVEMENT IN BROOMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 136,273, dated February 25, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SYRANUS STANDIsH, of Eureka, Lander county, Stateof Nevada, have invented new and useful Improvements in Brooms and Brushes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l'is a side elevation, and Fig. 2 a cross-section, of my invention.
This device is an improvement in the class of brooms in which the brush is secured in a metal head by means of' a wedge operated by the handle; and I therefore `disclaim such combination of parts, my invention pertaining to a special construction, which I will proceed to describe. .1
In the accompanying drawing, A represents the head, which is formed ot' sheet metal struck up in two equal parts or halves, and soldered together. The completed head has the general shape of the upper or wired portion of an ordinary broom, but the wider sides incline toward each other from the top downward, so that the corn or other material composing the broom proper, may be clamped between the wedge C, and said wider sides of the head. The socket E of the head is designed to be of va size to adapt it to handles of the ordinary kind, and it is screw-threaded, as shown. The handle B has a similar screwthread cut on it, so as to work freely in and out of the socket. A tenon is formed on the the head A interiorly, and corresponds thereto in its general form. If found necessary, in practice, a double hook or binder, G, may be applied to head A to prevent the longer sidesspreading apart. To secure the corn or brush portion of the broom in the head, the handle is screwed out of the socket E so far as the wedge permits, and the corn-butts inserted and properly arranged. The handle is then screwed into the socket, and the wedge caused to en.- ter between the butts and tightly clamp them against the sides of the head.
The device is strong, simple in construction, effective in operation, and allows the ready removal of an old, worn out, or defective brush and the substitution of new. But the principal novelty displayed in the invention is the construction whereby lessened size, weight, and cost of the device are attained, as compared with other devices for a similar purpose.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The screw-threaded handleB and the wedge C, in combination with the sheet-metal head A provided with the screw-threaded socketE, and having its wider sides inclined toward each other, all constructed and arranged in the manner and for the purpose herein set forth.
