CHARLES M. FOWLER, OF MOULIRIE, GEORGIA.
SWEEP ATTACHMENT.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES M. FOWLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Moultrie, in the county of Colquitt and State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful Sweep Attachment, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a sweep attachment for plows and consists in the novel construction and arrangement of its parts as hereinafter shown and described. I
The object of the invent-ion is to provide an attachment adapted to be applied to a plow stock and includes a clamping means adapted to adjustably hold sweep blades whereby the said blades may be disposed at any desired angle with relation to the surface of the soil.
In the accompanying drawing :Figure 1.
blocks 1 and 2 and also serves as means for securing the plow point 5 in position upon the lower end of a plow standard 6 in the manner as indicated in Fig. 1 of the drawing. A supplemental bolt 7 also passes transversely through the said blocks 1 and 2 and serves as additional means for holding the said blocks. Ledger plates 8 are provided with bearing faces and globular heads 9 which extend at obtuse angles to the bearing faces of the plates and which are adapted to be secured in the sockets 3 at the sides of the blocks 1 and 2 and upon the bearing face of each ledger plate 8 is mounted a scraper blade 10. By this structure it will be seen that a ball and socket connection is established between the ledger plates and the clamp blocks 1 and 2 and that by loosening the bolts 4 and 7 the scraper blades 10 may be pitched at any desired angle with relation to the surface of the soil and after being properly adjusted are secured in adjusted position by tightening the said bolts 4 and 7.
Specification of Letters Patent. I
Application filed June 15, 1910.
Patented July 11, 1911. Serial No. 567,079.
Having described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is I 1. The combination with a plow standard and a plow point attached thereto, a bolt passing through the point and standard and projecting tothe rear thereof, of a sweep attachment, comprising two co-acting clamping plates provided wit-h two apertures, one to receive the projecting end of the bolt and with two sockets upon opposed faces forming when the plates are in opposed position two globular receptacles, two ledger plates, each one provided with a globular head adapted to fit in the respective socket of the clamping plates and to normally hold the plates slightly apart when the plates are holding the led er plates in adjusted position, a short bolt passing through the other opening of the plate, and nuts upon the outer ends of the bolts for clamping the ledger plates in adjusted position and simultaneously locking the plow point to the standard.
2. A sweep attachment, comprising two plates, said plates being provided with semispherical depressions or recesses intermedi ate of its ends near the long edges thereof, two ledger plates, a scraper blade carried by each ledger plate, a cylindrical stem carried by each ledger plate, and a globular head forming the terminal for each stem, the globular heads of the ledger plates being adapted to fit within opposed recesses of the plates, and means for clamping the plates toward each other to hold the globular heads of the ledger plates in adjusted position, whereby said ledger plates may be adjusted to various angles with relation to each other.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES M. FOWLER.
