PENNSYLVANIA ELECTRIC-FUSE CARTRIDGE.
983,8?3. Specification of Letters Eatent.
Tu all "iv/ 10m} it may concern:
lie 1t lcnown that l, Jotix tinonoweuu', a
citizen of the United States. residing a Plymouth. in the county ot Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania. have invented a new and useful lllectric-l use Cartridge, of which the following a specification.
This invention relates to electric tuse cartridges such as are intended to burn out un,
circuit, the fuse proper being arranged in-' side the cartridge casing and secured to the terminals. The detect in these cartridges as usually manutactured is that when the :tnse.
burns out, the usefulness of the. entire cartridge is destroyed and the whole device. including the casing oi insulated material, and the copper terminals. is thrown away, and an entire new cartridge is secured.
The. principal object of the present inven tion is to provide a. strong. simple, durable and comparatively inexpensive form of electric fuse cartridge ha ing a casing of insulating material and suitable terminals connected by a fusible conductor. the device being so arranged that when the ttusible conductor burnsout. the cartridge can be readily disassembled tor the purpose of substituting a new fusible conductor, whereby the insulating casing and terminals can be used over and over again with ditl'ereut fuses, and thereby avoid the expense of securing a new casing and terminals every time the tuse burns out.
\Vith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the (our bination and arrangement of parts and in the details of constructhm hereinafter described and claimed. it. being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of invention herein disclosed can he made within the scope of the claims without departing t'roi'n the spirit of the invention.
l n the accompairving drawings forming part ol this specification:--l ignre l is a longitudinal section. partly in elevation,
through a fuse cart rid 'e cmistructed in aecordance with the present. invention. Fig. l is an end elevatlon. Fig. 3 is a perspective in; 4" a V1.14

Like reference rmm rals indicate spondlng parts in the dilierent tigures o. drawings.
The retm'enee numeral 1 indi ates the can tridee easingwhich is formed pref hard rubber or other suitable insma J I terial. The casing l pre'teral'ily is in form of an open ended tube.
The reference numerals f2 and 3 indicate theternnnals by means of which the cat:-
tride'e may be arranged in an elec cal circuit in any suitable manner. Each or terminals 2 and 3 has rigidly secured thereto a dished disk 4, the periphery of which bears against the end of the tubular easing 1 is securely held inposition by means o1 ea 5 which covers the flat periphery 6 of the dislt t and is provided with an annular ere tension or sleeve '7 which tits around the end of the tubular casing 1. The means for securing the cap a and spaced disks 4 to the end of the casing 1 preferably consists eta plurality of threaded rods 8 which are mounted in the end of the casing 1 and I adapted to receive threaded wing nuts or the like S). The bolts 8 extend tl'iroug'h suitable openings in the disk 4 and cap 5. The cap 5 serves to hold the disk 4. in position and the disk 4 serves to hold the terminal 3 in position. Adjacent its central portion, the disk 4, as shown clearly in Fig. 2, is provided with an elongated slot through which the terminal extends, the portions of said.
disk adjacent said slot being extended longitudinally along the terminal to form the flanges 10 and 11 which are integral with the disle-l. the flange 11 being very much longer than. the fian'g e 10.
The tlange 10 and a portion of the flange 11 is soldered or otherwise rigidly secured to the terminal. Adjacent the flangell the terminal is cut-away or rabbeted as indicated at, 12 and a portion of the cut-away material, indicated by tlie numeral 13 is soldered or otherwdse secured to the resilient end M of the flange 11. A, set serew is extended through the terminal to and through the block 13 ot copper or other material and is prorided with a washer 1? and by means of which the set screw may i: rotated so as to adjust the block 13 toward and from (he portion 16 of the terminal so as to clamp the fusible conductor therebetween. The fusib e conductor in this is indicated by th- 'tcrence numeral and has its ective ends seemed to "the terminals and in the manner described. The itusible conductor 20, in the emlmdiment of invention illustrated, is formed of coiled wire so as to be capable of extension and contraclion.
(lonstructed as described the mode of using the improved device is as follows. When the terminals 2 and. 3 are suitably connectsin the circuit, and. the fusible conductor 2i connecting said terminals 2 and 3 burns o 1 from any cause, it is only neces- 20 sar to eznove the cartridge from the c1r .1 I i v 1 oh the ten nuals l and 2;, or
n i'rozn the casing l by removg nuts 5, A new fusible con- 7 then clamped between the end 'i and the block 13 of one oi the by means of "the set screw 15, and ible conductor is passed through the esinfi l and extends or stretched su'ilicient y to permit it to be clamped at its outer end in engagement with the other terminal. After the fusible conductor has been properly secured in place, the end disk 4t and cap 5 are secured in position upon the ends or me easing; 1 and the fuse cartridge is ready in be reinserted into the circuit from which. 1t vxas emovcd when tl e tusible conductor ill-1e car: C150, .l v terminal when the tusc bur s out 1: claimed as new is :lectmc fuse cartridge comprising a tubular casing formed of insulating material, a disk at each end of said casing, a terminal secured to each of said disks, each dish having'a flexible flange provided With a contact member adapted to cotiperate with i said terminal and a fusible conductor secured at its ends to said terminals.
2. in electric it'use cartridge comprising a tubular casing formed. of insulating material, a removable disk at each end oi said casing, a terminal secured to each of said disks, each dish having a flexible flange, and each terminal having a portion thereof cutaway and secured to said flange, whereby to provide means for securing the end of a fusible conductor, a cap at end of said casing for holding said (llSliS in position thereon. and a :tusible anc. extensible conduct 1' detachably secured at. its ends to said terminals.
3). [in electrh: fuse cartridge comprising a tubular open ended casing; formed of insulating material, threaded rods secured to the ends ol';sa.id casing, a disk fitted against cavh'end of said casing and havingperforations to receive said threaded rods, each of said disks being dished, and formed with an elongatcd'slot, each dish being provided with a lOIljJf and a short flange adjacent the slot, :1 terminal extending through said. slot and having said long; and short, flanges secured thereto. the extreme end oi": the long flange being; flexible, a contact member securel "to the flexible end of said flange, a set screw extending through said content member and said terminal, and a cap fitted over each end of said. tubular casing and liavinn opez to receive said threaded rods, there be wing; nuts on said threaded rods for securingsaid caps in position upon said casing.
in testin'iony that 1 claim the foreszoing as my own, I have hereto aliirced my signa- 3 ture in the presence oit two witnesses.
