ATTQRIVEYS THE mama's PETERS cm, WASHINGTON, u.
Patented Mar, 28,1911.
UNETE) @A JOHN JOHNSON, OF FOX LAKE, NORTH DAKOTA.
DOOR-STOP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 28, 1911.
Application filed October 1, 1910. Serial No. 584,863.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN JorrNsoN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Fox Lake, in the county of Ramsey and State of North Dakota, l1t"6 invented a new and Improved Door-Stop, of which the fol lowing is a full, clear, and exact description.
An object of the invention is to provide a door step for releasably securing a door to a wall or the like, to hold the same in open position.
For the purpose mentioned use is made of a gripping member, and a trip member for releasing the gripping member, to grip the door when the trip member is engaged by the door.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my device and showing the same in operative position for releasably securing a door; Fig. 2 is a view looking down at the device from above; Fig. 3 is a similar view but showing the gripping member released by the trip member and releasably gripping a door; and Fig. 4: is a sectional view taken on the line H in Fig. 3.
Referring more particularly to the figures, I provide a base 10, having a gripping member 11, mounted to swing on a, rod 12, secured to the base 10, and a spring 13 is preferably coiled around the rod 12 and engages the gripping member 11 to operate the same. A stop lug 14 is provided on the base 10, for limiting the movement of the member 11. Mounted to swing in bearings 15 on the base 10 is a trip member 16, having one end thereof engaged by a spring 17, and th other end adapted to engage the gripping member 11, to releasably hold the same in open or inoperative position, as will be easily seen by referring to Figs. 1 and 2. Now suppose, for instance, that a door 18 hingedly mounted on a door frame, swings open by the action of the wind. When the door engages the trip member 16, on the base 10, secured to a wall 19, the end of the trip member engaged by the door moves inwardly toward the spring 17 and thus the other end of the member 16 moves outwardly and out of engagement with the gripping member 11, thereby causing the gripping member to swing, owing to the action of the spring 13, and the said member 11 engages and releasably secures the door 18, to hold the same in open position. Thus the door is securely held open and kept fro-m banging back and forth against the wall or door frame. To release the door, the gripping member 11 is moved to the position shown in Fig. 1. As the said member 11 assumes this position, the spring end of the trip member is caused to move outwardly toward the door by the spring 17, and engaging the door, pushes the same away from the gripping member 11. At the same time the other end of the trip member moves toward the base and engages the gripping member, thus holding the same in open position as will be easily seen in Fig. 1.
Although my device is preferably adapted for hinged doors, it will be understood that the same can be conveniently adapted for use on various kinds and classes of closures.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A door stop, comprising a gripping member for gripping a door, and a trip member for releasing the gripping member to grip the door when the trip member is engaged by the door.
2. A door stop, comprising a spring controlled gripping member for removably gripping a door, and a trip member for releasing the gripping member to grip the door when the trip member is engaged by the door.
3. A door stop, comprising a base, a gripping member mounted to swing thereon, and a trip member mounted to release the gripping member to grip the door when the trip member is engaged by the door.
4. A door stop, comprising a base, a spring controlled gripping member mounted to swing thereon, a stop lug for limiting the movement of the gripping member, and a trip member for releasing the gripping member to releasably grip the door when the trip member is engaged by the door.
5. In a door stop, the combination of a gripping member, for gripping a door, and a trip member engaging the gripping member to release the same for gripping the door when the trip member is engaged by the door, the said trip member being adapted to move the door toward the frame thereof, when the gripping member is released from the door.
6. ln av door stop, the combination of a spring controlled gripping member mounted to swing on a base, a spring controlled trip member for releasing the gripping member to releasably grip the door When the trip member is engaged by the door, the said trip member being adapted to move the door toward the frame thereof when the gripping member is released from the door, and a stop seems lug on the base for limiting the movement 10 of the gripping member.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
JOHN JOHNSON.
