To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOI-IN R. PERRY, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tobacco-Pipes, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates broadly to means for separating nicotin from tobacco-smoke in pipes and for preventing saliva from mingling with the nicotin and entering the bowl of the pipe.

My primary object is to provide a pipe equipped with a device of the character indicated, the whole construction being simple and inexpensive and readily cleansable, and the operation of the pipe, when in use, being of an improved character.

The invention is illustrated in its preferred embodiment in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 represents a sectional View of a pipe constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2, a perspective view of an improved nicotin-collector and saliva-deflector employed; Fig. 3, a section taken, as indicated, at line 3 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4L, a side elevational view showing a slight modification of the construction shown in Fig. 2; Fig. 5, a perspective view of a nipple employed for connecting the mouth-piece and stem of the pipe; Fig. 6, a broken sectional view showing a modification of the construction shown in Fig. 1; and Fig. 7, a broken perspective view illustrating the relation of the parts shown in Fig. 6.

Referring to the construction shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 5, A represents a pipe-bowl; B, a stem connected with said bowl; C, a mouth-piece; D, a combination nicotin-collector and saliva-deflector; and E, a tubular nipple, or connecting member. tively large chamber 7 therein, the mouthpiece and chamber being of circular crosssection. The chamber has leading therefrom a smoke-passage 8 which extends through the flattened tip 9 of the mouth-piece. The member E is of tubular form, being equipped near its central portion with a flange 10. The bore 3 of the stem is enlarged, as indicated at 11, to receive the portion 12 of the tubular nipple E, the parts having slip-joint connection. The nipple E has a bore 13 therethrough which is provided at its outer end with internal threads 13. The outer end of the nipple is provided externally with threads 14, and the inner end of the mouth-piece is internally threaded to connect therewith. The combination nicotin-collector and saliva-deflector D comprises a rod 15 which is preferably composed of metal and which has a threaded shank 16 which carries the saliva-deflector 17. The rod 15 is provided at its upper surface with a small longitudinal groove 18 which is eX- tended, as indicated at 19 and 20, through the upper portion of the shank 16 and the saliva-deflector 17. Adjacent to t-he shank 16 and at the base of the saliva-deflector 17 is a shoulder 21 adapted to engage the outer end of the nipple E. The member 5 lits within the straight, smooth bore of the pipestem, and the inner end of the member 15 alfords an extension which extends beneath the tobacco-chamber of the pipe-bowl. The stem-portion of the member 15 is received in the bore of the nipple 12, and the salivadeflector is located in the mouth-piece outside of the nipple.

From the foregoing description, it will be understood that in the use of the pipe, the smoke is drawn through the groove 17 and the extensions 1S and 19 of said groove, the nicotin and oil distillations being deposited along the walls of the groove. Any saliva which may enter the mouth-piece will lodge beneath the saliva-deflector 17 and will be prevented from entering the bore of the stem of the pipe (to mingle with the nicotin or oils of the tobacco), and from entering the tobacco-chamber of the bowl.

When desired, the mouth-piece and nipple may be withdrawn from the stem of the pipe, thereby withdrawing the nicotin-collector from the bore of the pipe-stem. Thus the rod 15 will be exposed substantially throughout its length and may be wiped or cleansed as desired. If desired, the mouthpiece may be disconnected from the nipple and the nipple removed from the member 15 over which it is adapted to slip, thus enabling the nipple and the shank of the nico-V tin-collector, as well as the saliva-deflector, to be cleansed.

It is to be observed that the connection between the mouth -piece and nicotin collector through the medium of the nipple E is independent of the connection between the nipple and the stem of the pipe, so that the mouth-piece and nipple may be employed as a medium for holding the nicotincollector during the wiping operation. The character of the connection between the mouth-piece and nicotin-collector is such as to prevent relative rotation of the parts during the wiping operation.

The device D1 shown in Fig. f1- is similar to the device I) shown in Fig. 2 and the parts are similarly indicated. In the construction shown in F ig. d, however, the groove 18 is closed at its inner end, as indicated at 22. In other words, the groove 1S instead of being cut the full length of the rod 15 is cut the full length of the rod except for a small portion at the extremity of the rod. This filled. portion 22 is adapted to scrape the wall of the bore of the pipe-stem when the nicotin-collector is withdrawn from the pipe-stem.

In the construction shown in Figs. G and 7, B2, C2, D2, E2, represent, respectively, the stem, mouth-piece, nicotin-collector and connecting nipple. The construction is such as to avoid the necessity of threading the shank of the nicotin-collector, and an added advantage is gained by threading the inner end of the mouth-piece externally. Relative rotation between the mouth-piece and nicotin-collector is prevented by providing the shank of the collector, outside the Iiange 21, with a lug 13, which is received by a notch 24 with which the adjacent end of the mouth-piece is provided. The inner end of the nipple E2 is reduced in external diameter and has slip-joint connection with the stem B2, as indicated at 25. The outer end of the nipple is counter-bored and internally threaded, and the inner end of the mouthpiece is reduced externally and threaded, as indicated at 26. When the parts are assembled, the flange 21 is clamped between the internal shoulder 2T of the nipple and the end-surface 28 of the mouth-piece. Thus, it will be understood that the nicotin-collector may be withdrawn from the stem through the medium of the mouth-piece, and may be held through the medium of the mouth-piece during the wiping operation. To disconnect the parts, the nipple may be unscrewed from the mouth piece. The cleansing of the mouth-piece may be the more readily effected since there are no internal threads to break the smooth inner surface.

lWhat I regard as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is'- 1. In a device of the character set forth, the combination of a pipe-stem formed with a straight, smooth bore therein, a mouthpiece, a tubular nipple connecting` said stem and mouth-piece, and a combination nicotincolleetor and saliva-detlector, comprising a rod fitting in said bore and provided in its upper portion with an uninterrupted longitudinal groove lying adjacent the upper wall of said bore, said nicotin-collector having a shank extending through said nipple, and carrying a saliva-deflector located in the upper portion of the chamber of said mouth-piece, said nicotin-collector, stem and saliva-deflector having smoke-passages registering with said groove.

2. In aV construction of the character set forth, the combination of a pipe-stem formed withv a straight smooth bore therein, a mouth piece, a tubular nipple connecting said stem and mouth-piece, said mouth-piece and nipple being non-rotatable with relation to each other, and a combined nicotin-collector and saliva-defiector, comprising a rod fitting in said bore and having a shank extending. through said nipple, with an uninterrupted longitudinal groove in the upper portion of said rod affording a smoke-passage, the shank extending through said nipple having a flange at the outer end of the nipple, and a saliva-deflector carried by the upper portion of said last-named flange and located in the upper portion of said mouthpiece, said shank and saliva-deflector having a groove through the upper portion thereof affording a continuation of said first-named groove, for the purpose set forth.-

3. In a device of the character set forth, the combination of a pipe-stem having a straight, smooth bore therein, a mouth-piece having an externally-threaded inner end, a nipple having slip-joint connection with said stem and threaded connection with said mouth-piece, a combination nicotin-collector and saliva-deflector having a shank extending through said nipple and having slipjoint connection therewith, said shank having a 'Hange preventing said nipple from withdrawal thereover, and lug and notch connections serving to prevent relative rotation of mouth-piece and nicotin-collector.
