SACK-HOLDER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES WV. VANCE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ligonier, in the county of Noble and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sack-Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to bag holders or clamps.
One object of the invention is to provide a novel construction of bag holder which will securely hold the bag or sack until it is desired to release the same, the mouth of the sack being held in such manner that access may be had to the interior.
A second object of the invention is the provision of means whereby the device may be adjusted so that various thicknesses of bags may be securely held therein.
'VVith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in general of a base portion whereon is located a clamp of novel construction.
The invention further consists in certain novel details of construction and co1nbinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the acompanying drawings, and specifically set forth in the claims.
In the acompanying drawings, like charactors of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and :Figure 1 is a front elevation of the invention as applied to a post. Fig. 2 is a side view thereof. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective of the moving clamp used with this invention. Fig. 4: is a section on the line Lt of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a section on the line 5 5 of Fig. 1.
The numeral 10 indicates the back or base of the invention adapted to be secured in any suitable manner to a delivery spout and on this base at the upper end thereof are mounted spaced bearing blocks 11. Each of these bearing blocks is provided with a suitable perforation 12 to receive the pivot ournals 13 of a lever 14. This lever is furthermore provided with spaced cars 15 having suitable perforations therein to receive a pin 16.
Mounted on the base below the bearing blocks is a guide 17 the central portion of which is spaced away from the base as indicated at 18. In the opening thus formed be- Specification of Letters Patent.

tween the guide and base is received a stem 19 having an elongated lower end 20, the end face whereof is provided with serrations 21 at each end. The upper end of the stem is recessed to form spaced ears 22 which are provided with alining perforations to re-' ceive a pin 23. At 24 is shown a link provided with enlarged heads 25 having perforations therein aclapted to receive the pin 23 and the pin which passes through the ears of the lever. The bearing 17 is furthermore recessed as at 26 and in this recess is held a spring member 27 having a catch 28 formed on the end thereof. This catch 28 is so arranged that when the lever, and consequently the upper clamp, are raised the catch 28 will enter a recess 29 formed in the front face of the clamp.
The bottoniclamp is formed with a body portion 30 having slots 31 at each end thereof and through these slots pass bolts 32 which serve not only to hold the bottom clamp to the base 10 but also to permit this adjustment vertically along said base. Projecting from the upper edge of the bottom clamp are lugs 33 having serrated upper faces 84: to coact with the serrations on the upper clamp. These lugs furthermore have upturned ends 35 over which the edge of the bag engages. The lugs thus form a species of hook as well as a clamp so that the empty bag may be engaged thereover by both hands if necessary and afterward clamped by depressing the lever.
In the operation of the device the lever is first raised and the bag then adjusted on the lugs as previously described. The lever is then depressed and this holds the bag firmly in position during filling. By reason of the spaced relation of the lugs the bag is held sufliciently far open to permit access to the interior while by reason of the adjustment provided different thicknesses of bags may be held open ranging from the thin material used in salt bags to the heavy sacking used for ore, coffee and the like.
There has thus been provided a simple and eflicient device-of the kind described and for the purpose specified.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
1. In a device of the class described, a bottom clamp comprising a body portion provided with parallel slots each adjacent a side edge of said body, lugs projecting outwardly from the top edge of the body and having serrated upper faces, and upturned extremities on said lugs whereby the lugs constitute hooks.
2. In a device of the class described, a base, a top clamp held on the base to slide thereon, a guide for the top clamp, means attached to the clamp to move the same, a bottom clamp comprising a body portion provided with parallel slots each adjacent a side edge of said body, lugs projecting outwardly from the top edge of the body of the bottom clamp and having serrated upper faces, and upturned extremities on said lugs, bolts passing through said base and slots to hold said bottom clamp in adjusted relation to the top clamp.
3. In a device of the class described, a base, a guide mounted on said base, a top clamp having a stem slidable in said guide and provided with a notch in the outer face below said guide, an elongated head formed on the stem and provided with serrations on its bottom face at its extremities, a lever pivoted to the base above said top clamp, a link connecting the top clamp and lever whereby the clamp is raised as the lever is raised, a spring linger attached to the guide and provided with an end adapted to enter the notch in the clamp when said clamp is raised, a bottom clamp comprising a body portion provided with parallel slots each adjacent a side edge of said body, lugs projecting outwardly from the top edge of the body and having serrated upper faces adapted to coact with the serrations on the top clamp and upturned extremities on said lugs, and bolts passing through said base and slots to hold the bottom clamp in adjusted relation to the top clamp.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES lV. VANCE.
