AUGUST VOIGHT, OF NET/V BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE STANLEY WORKS, OF NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION OF CONNECTICUT.
HASP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 17, 1911.
Application filed December 21, 1909. Serial No. 534,347.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUST Vororrr, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New Britain, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hasps, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to produce an adjustable hasp having features of novcity and advantage.
Referring to the drawings-Figure 1 is an edge view of the hasp in place upon a door. Fig. 2 is a front view of the hasp. F 3 is a section on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
In the embodiment of the invention illustrated in the drawings (6 denotes the door case, Z) the door, 0 the hasp and d the staple.
As will be seen from the drawings, the leaf of the hasp is made in two parts l2. The upper leaf is slotted as at 3 and passing through this slot are two headed pins 4 which are secured to the under leaf 2, these pins acting to hold the parts together and to limit and partly guide the hasp in its adjustment. An additional guiding and strengthening feature which may be utilized if desired are the interengaging beads 66 and 7-7 along the edges of the leaves 12, which, as clearly appears, both stiffen and strengthen the leaves and act as guides and prevent any great amount of lateral displacement of the two leaves of the hasp. If but a single headed pin is used these interengaging beads relieve the pin from lateral shearing strain. The staple (Z is preferably rigidly secured to its base and the whole is rigidly secured to the door.
Applicant is aware that it is old to use an adjustable staple in connection with a rigid hasp but this structure is objectionable for many reasons and particularly in that when any strain is brought to bear on the staple it acts as a lever tending to loosen the screws or other devices by which it is secured in place.
I am aware that this invention can be embodiedin various forms which shall have the features of construction and advantage herein described.
I claim A hasp comprising two superposed members movable length-wise with respect to each other, one of said members provided with a longitudinally-extending slot, one or more headed pins fixed to the other of said members and extending through said slot whereby the members are slidably-connected together, and a pair of longitudinally-disposed and outwardly-projecting stiffening beads formed in and spaced from the longitudinal edges of each of said members, the beads of one member extending in the other of said members and said beads constituting guides during the shifting movement of the members and further preventing lateral movement of the members with respect to each other.
AUGUST VOIGHT.
