WINDOW-BLIND.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 235,151, dated December 7, 1880 Application tiled November 18, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, PIERRE JANSSEN, of the city, county, and State of New York, haveinvented a new and useful Improvement in the Construction of Window-Blinds, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which like letters indicate the same parts.

The object ot' my invention is to improve the construction and operation ot' that class of window-blinds having slats'movable on their axes for the purpose ot' regulating light and ventilation.
In the better class of houses it is common to construct these blinds in such a manner that the mechanism for operating the blindslats will be entirely concealed, excepting a small knob or thumb-piece, by turning or sliding which the slats in any single section of the blind are all moved to any desired angle or position.
My invention relates to an improved construction and combination of the various parts of a blind provided with the above-mentioned Slat-operating mechanism; and it consists in a certain combination of parts, as will hereinafter be more fully described, and pointed out in the claim.

E and their operating mechanism are secured. One end of the slats E have formed on them the usual round tenons, which turn in recesses in one of the side stiles of the frame B. The
slats E, thus forming a pocket or recess, in which the rack and pinions for operating the slats are placed. These pinions l) have square orifices, in which a square tenon formed on the adjacent ends of the slats E is tightly fitted. Circular hubs formed on D loosely fit and turn in corresponding holes made through the plate or strip O, which is secured to the stile ot' the frame B, as shown. All ot' the pinions D are caused to turn and move the slats E as may be desired by turning the pinion f, which connects with the rack F. By means of the thumb-piece f any other suitable means may be employed for this purpose.
l am aware that an independent rectangular framing has been before used to support slats operated by a series of levers, a connecting-rod, and counter-weight, which constructhe blind to be grooved out to admit the slatoperating mechanism within it, said grooving of the main stile greatly reducing its cross-section and materially weakening it, and leaving 4the whole main frame of the blind more liable to warp, twist, or sag than would be the case in a blind Whose side stiles have about the same cross-sectional strength. Another ob- :jection to the above arrangement ot' Slat-opermanufacturing or adjusting theremovable slat- .frame to the main frame of the blind, or on the removal of the said Slat-frame for readjustment or repairs of the outside main frame, the whole of the slat-operating mechanism is exposed to displacement or injury. It is also very inconvenient to adjust the said mechanism within the grooved main stile. It is therefore desirable, rst, not to sacrifice the neat, light appearance of small inside blinds, which have a Slat-operating mechanism attached toa removable rectangular frame, in order to introduce said mechanism within the blind; second, it is also desirable that both side stiles of the main frame of the blind be of equal strength, as above set forth; and, third, it is desirable that the Slat-operating mechanism be entirely inclosed within one stile ot' the removable rectangular slat-frame in such manby collision with other objects during the process of manufacture, or when the same is removed from or readjusted to the main frame, as above set forth. I am also enabled by my arrangement of slat-operating mechanism within the side stile of the inner removable frame to make the complete blind cheaply, and also to make the single side stiles, with the operating mechanism contained therein, separate from anyother part ofthe blind, and ship the said operating stile, at small expense, to distant parts without danger of derangement, where they can be applied by other parties in the manufacture of blinds of this class.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The removable frame B, carrying the slats E, and adapted to be arranged within the main frame A, the tenons of the slats at one end being angular, in combination with the pinions D, through which said angular tenons pass, said pinions having cylindrical hubs fitting and turning within openings in the plate U, which retains all the pinions in position in the removable frame, the continuous vertical rack-bar F engaging the pinions, and the exposed thumb-piecef, carrying a pinion, j', for operating the rack-bar and imparting motion to the Slat-operating pinions, substantially as shown and described.
