MATCH-SAFE.

To all 'whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN SCHUT, citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Match-Safes, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to match safes and has for its object to provide a comparatively simple and inexpensive device of this character, capable of being readily attached to a wall or other support and adapted to hold a box of matches in position to permit the discharge of the contents thereof into a suitable receiving tray.

A further object is to provide a match safe or holder formed from a single metallic blank, the construction of which is such as to produce, when folded, a box receiving compartment, match tray, and trough for the burned matches.

A still further object of the invention is generally to improve this class of devices so as to increase their utility durability and efliciency, as well as to reduce the cost of manufacture.

'Further objects and advantages will appear in the following description, it being understood that various changes in form, proportions and minor details of construction may be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims.

For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction and the means for effecting the result, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a match safe constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of thesame; Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view; Fig. 4 is a plan view of the blank from which the'match safe is constructed;l Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view illustrating a modified form of the invention; Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of the rear portion of Fig. 5 showing the construction of the suspension tongue.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.

The improved match safe forming the subject matter of the present invention is preferably formed from a single metallic Specification of Letters Patent.

blank of the constrl'lction shown in Fig. 4 of the drawing and includes a front section 5 adapted to be folded on the lines 6 to produce oppositely disposed side walls 7, the longitudinal edges of the metal forming the side walls 7 being bent inwardly to produce retaining flanges S. The flanges S are spaced from the front section 5 to produce a conlpartment for the reception of a box or tray of matches, indicated at 9. v

A transverse incision 10 is formed in the front section 5 between the fold lines G, and the metal at said incision bent laterally and upwardly on the line 11 to produce the bottom 12 of the match receiving compartment, the free edge of the metal constituting the bottom section 12 being bent upwardly on the line 13 to produce a vertically disposed retaining lip 14.

The metal between the lines 11 and 15 is bent downwardly in a vertical plane at 1G and is thence extended at substantially right angles to the wall 16 to produce a match receiving tray 17. The metal forming the bottom of the match receiving tray 17 is bent upwardly on the fold lines 1S to produce oppositely disposed end walls 19, the free edges of the metal constituting the end walls 19 being bent downwardly to produce reinforcing flanges 20. The metal is thence bent upwardly on the line 21 and rebent upon itself at 22 to produce a vertically disposed retaining flange 23 terminating in a transversely disposed trough 24 adapted to receive the burned matches.

An opening 25 formed by the incision 10 communicates with the interior of the match box compartment so that when a box or tray of matches is positioned within the compartment, the matches will be fed automatically into the tray 17 and in convenient position to be removed when desired, the burned matches being placed on the trough 24, as before stated. A vertically disposed slot 2G is formed in one of the side walls 7 so as to expose the striking surface 27 of the match box 9. A wire or bail 28 is attached in any suitable manner to the flanges 8 to permit the match box to be suspended from a nail or other suitable support.

In folding the blank to form the match box or safe, the side walls 7 are first bent laterally on the lines 6 and the longitudinal edges of the side walls bent inwardly to produce the guide flanges 8. The metal is then pressed or folded laterally on the line 11 to produce the bot-tom 12 of the box receiving compartment and thence bent downwardlyon the line 1l and laterally on the line 15 to produce the match receiving tray 17, the metal constituting the opposite ends of the tray 17 being thence bent upwardly on the lines 18 and the metal constituting the front of the tray'17 being bent upon itself and extending downwardly, outwardly and upwardly to produce the trough 24.

In Figs. 5 and 6 of the drawings, there is illustrated a modified form of the invention, in which one of the flanges 8 is ex tended transversely across the rear of the match receiving compartment, as indicated at 29 and secured in any suitable manner to the adjacent side wall 3() thereof. In this form of the device the suspension bail 28 is dispensed with and the metal constituting the back 29 cut or punched to produce a suspension tongue 31, as best shown in Fig. 6 of the drawings, the construction and operation of the device being otherwise similar to that shown in Figs. 1 to l inclusive.

Attention is here called to the fact that the suspension bail 28 is made of stiff wire bent into triangular shape and extended through suitable openings in the flanges 8 thus to reinforce and strengthen the body of the match safe and prevent the side walls thereof from spreading.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:

l. A match safe including a body portion having a compartment for the reception of a box of matches and provided with an integral receiving tray and trough arranged at the lower end of said body portion, the bottom of the tray, trough and box receiving compartment being disposed in stepped relation.

2. A match safe formed of a single piece of metal and including a body portion having oppositely disposed side walls terminating in inwardly extending flanges spaced from the front of the match safe to form a compartment for the reception of a box of matches, the bottom of the compartment being inclined upwardly and the metal at the front of said bottom being bent downwardly and laterally to produce a match receiving tray, the metal being thence bent upwardly for a distance equal to approximately onehalf vthe height of the tray and thence continued downwardly and upwardly to form a depending trough, the bot-tom of the match receiving compartment, tray and trough being disposed in stepped relation.

3. A match safe formed of a single piece of metal and comprising a body portion having its side walls bent inwardly to pro duce guide flanges spaced from the front of the body portion to form a compartment for the reception of a box of matches, the metal at the bottom o-f the compartment being bent downwardly and laterally to produce a match receiving tray, and the metal forming the opposite ends of the tray being bent to produce reinforcing flanges, the metal at the forward portion of the tray being bent upwardly in contact with the adjacent ends of the end walls of the tray and thence downwardly and outwardly to produce a longitudinally disposed trough the bottom of which is disposed in a plane below the bottom of the match tray, there being an opening formed in the body portion to permit the discharge of matches from the compartment into the receiving tray.

A blank for match safes formed of a single sheet of metal, having vlone end thereof reduced and its intermediate portion provided with a transverse incision intersected by spaced longitudinal incisions, there being spaced longitudinally disposed fold lines forming a continuation of the longitudinal incisions and intersecting the transverse incision, said fold lines being extended from one end of the blank to the reduced portion thereof, and a plurality of transverse fold lines disposed between the transverse incision and the reduced portion of the blank. c
