To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MORRIS KLEIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oakland, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Horseshoes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invention relates to horseshoes, and the principal object of the same is to provide novel means whereby the shoe may be rigidly but detachably fastened to a hoof without the necessity of employing nails or other hoofpenetrating fastening means.

In carrying out the objects of the invention generally stated above it will be understood, of course, that the essential features thereof are necessarily susceptible of changes in details and structural arrangements, one preferred and practical embodiment of which is shown in the accompanying drawings wherein Figure 1 is a view in side elevation showing the improved shoe clamped to a hoof. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the shoe. Fig. 8 is a view in side elevation of the shoe showing the clamping means released. Fig. l is a fragmentary sectional view taken on the line AA, Fig. 1.

Referring to said accompanying drawings by numerals, 1 designates the body of the improved shoe which is of the usual or any preferred shape and provided with the toe and heel calks 23. The upper surface of the body 1 is partly surrounded by an upstanding flange 4L which is inwardly inclined, the inclination of said flange being greatest at the front of the shoe and merging into a substantially straight wall 5 on one side of the body. Said flange extends from one heel around said body to a point intermediate of the other heel and the toe calk. Beyond the cut-away portion of said flangc,the body is provided with outstanding laterally projecting dovetailed lugs 6 which provide be tween them the correspondingly shaped recesses 7.

A latch 8 which is shaped similar to and forms a continuation of flange 4, is hinged to said flange, said latch having its undersurface provided with dovetailed .lugs 9 for interlocking engagement with recesses 7 and recesses 10 for interlocking engagement with lugs 6. Lugs 9 of the latch are provided with openings 11 which aline with similar openings 12 formed in the inner wall of recesses 7 when said lugs are in interlocked engagement to permit said latch to be detachably fastened to body 1 by the screws or bolts 13.

In use, the latch is raised relative to body 1 and a hoof fitted on body 1 within the flange 1. The latch is then rocked to interlocking engagement with body 1, and by means of the fasteners 13 the shoe is locked to the hoof.

It will be seen that the improved shoe may be readily attached to a hoof and rigidly locked thereon without the use of the usual hoof-penetrating fasteners, and also that the same may be readily removed.

What I claim as my invention is l. A horseshoe comprising a body, a hoofengaging flange partly surrounding said body, latching lugs carried by said body at one end of said flange, a latch hinged to said flange and forming a continuation of said flange, said latch adapted for interlocking engagement with said lugs, and means for rigidly but detachably locking said flange to said body.

2. A horseshoe comprising a body provided with lugs and recesses adjacent one heel portion, a hoof-engaging flange carried by said body and extending from one heel thereof and terminating adjacent said lugged and recessed portion, and a latch hinged to said flange and forming a continuation thereof, said latch provided with lugs and recesses adapted for interlocking engagement with the lugs and recesses of said body.

3. A horseshoe comprising a body provided with laterally projecting dovetailed lugs adjacent one heel portion thereof, an inwardly inclined upstanding hoof-engaging flange carried by said body and extending from said lugs around the body to the opposite heel thereof, a latch pivoted to said flange and forming a continuation thereof, said latch provided with lugs and recesses adapted for interlocking engagement with the lugs of the body, and detachable fastenmeans for locking said latch to said I1 1 testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
