Une of the objections to metallic mattresses in general use is that the hair or other stuffed mattresses which are placed thereon shift from one side to the othei, or so spread in use'that a very unsightly appearance is the result.

rfhe present improvement therefore con- 1 sists of a wire mattress which is provided at each side thereof with an improved longitudinal side guard, which side guards are connected thereto in an improved manner and which improved mattress is comparatively simple in its construction and therefore inexpensive to produce.

rlhe present improvement is particularly adapted for use with what is known as av National Spring fabric, tliatis a` fabric made up of links and connecting plates, and one'of the objects of the invention is to i form the supports for the wire portions of the side guards integral with a row of these connecting` plates.

In the drawings accompanying and forming part of this specification, Figure l is a perspective view of one end of a bedstead illustrating this improved mattress and its side guard; Fig. 2 is a similar perspective aies', illustrating in a somewhat different manner from that shown in Fig'. l` the side guards connected with the coil springs; Fig. 3 is a perspective view illustrating a somewhat diflerent form vof cross-bar or end for the mattress; and Fig. 4 is a detail view of one of the side-guard supports.

2i. which as hereinbefore stated is shown as a national mattress made up of links or wires 3 connected at their ends by plates or members 4, is connected vto thev cross-bars, one` only of which, as 7, is shown, by the usual'coilsprings 8. The side guards in the presentinstance are made up of suitable upright supports or members 9 bent at the lower ends inwardly, as at 10, to form along the outer edge ofthe mattress one setof connecting plates; that is to say, in the usual form of national mattress the plates along the outer edge are but semiformed plates, since but three wires are connected thereto instead of four as in the main body of the mattress. In the present instance these semi-formed plates are each bent upwardlyto form the upright supports for the side guards, so that these side-guard upiights thus are a part of the connecting .plates of the mattress, each being provided with the desired number of holes l2 for the reception of thel connecting links or wires l '13 forming the side guards, whereby the side guards may be made up of short wireformed-'portions just `as the bottom of the mattress itself is made up.

For giving tension to Ithe side guards, the end upright members orvposts are connected by coil springs 15 with suitable -angle plates 16 riveted or otherwise secured to the cross end-bar 7 hereinbefore referred to. In Fig. 2 each end upright member is connected to one-of the coil springs provided for giving tension to the bottom, instead of to a separate coil springas in Fig. l. In `Fig. 3 an additional cross-bar 17 is provided for the connection of the bed-bottom thereto, and between which and 'the main cross-bar 7 the springs are located, the 'cross-bari? having -turned up ends conforming to the upright supporting members of the side guards.

From the foregoing it will beobserved that the outer row of connecting plates of the mattress, owing to their formation, constitute the uprightysupporting members for the side guards, so that the entire mattress, comprisingthe 'side guards and the bottom, may be made up of short-links and connect.- ing plates or members, these latter being bent up' along the outer edges of the inattress for the purpose of forming the side guards. The term plates as used herein is intended to mean those parts or members which connect both longitudinal and transverse Wires of the fabric.
