ARTHUR FALK, 0F NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR T0 FALK TOBACCO CO., OF RICHMOND, VIRGINIA, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
DEVICE FOR FILLING TOBACCO-PIPES.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR FALK, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Device for Filling Tobacco-Pipes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object to provide a simple and economical device for filling a pipe with tobacco. By means of this device a pipeful of tobacco may readily be pressed into the pipe without spilling the tobacco.
Referring to the accompanying drawing- Figure l is a side view of a tobacco pipe with the filling device mounted on the bowl of the pipe and with the bowl shown in vertical section. Fig. 2 is a view similar to F ig. l showing a modified forni of filler and a rammer.
In the accompanying drawing l indicates 4a pipe and 2 a short cylinder of metal or other suitable material and formed with a flange of any suitable shape and width and,
as here shown, preferably of a slightly curved form to rest on and slightly extend beyond the rim of the bowl of the pipe. The diameter of the cylinder 2 is preferably that of the bowl of the pipe, though this is not absolutely essential. In conjunction with the cylinder 2 there is employed a cartridge 4f, which is filled with tobacco A', as shown, so that by sliding the envelop partly over the cylinder it will leave a portion of the envelop of the cartridge projecting beyond the tobacco as shown.
To fill a pipe with tobacco the cylinder 2 is placed over the mouth of the bowl of the pipe with the flange 8 resting on the rim thereof. A' cartridge 4, partly filled with tobacco, which has been mounted on the cylinder 2 by sliding the unlled end of the cartridge over the cylinder 2, and holding it in such position, projects above the cylinder 2 over the mouth of the bowl of the pipe. rlhe tobacco can then be pushed out of the cartridge into the bowl ,of the pipe Specification of Letters Patent.

by the finger or by a rammer. The envelop of the cartridge which is of paper or other suitable materialis preferably glazed or plated paper so as to cause the tobacco to slide or slip more easily through the cartridge when pushed lout of the same. The tobacco passes from the cartridge through the cylinder into the bowl of the pipe.
lVhile the cylinder and cartridge may be made of dierent sizes to fit the bowls of pipes of different sizes, the cylinder may be formed with a flange of such shape and width as to adapt the cylinder to rest on any sized bowl-as for example in the modification shown in Fig. 2, in which the cylinder is formed with a broad fiat flange 8 which is adapted to rest on the rim of a bowl of any diameter.
As hereinbefore stated, the tobacco may be pushed through the envelop of the cartridge with the finger, or a suitable rammer may le employed, such as the rammer 5 shown in Having described the invention, I claiml. In an apparatus of the character described, ,a short cylinder having a broad flange at one end adapted to be seated on, and extend over the rim of a pipe bowl, and a cartridge consisting of a paper tube partly filled with tobacco, the unfilled port-ion of said tube extending over said cylinder and having its end resting against said flange.
2. In an apparatus of the character described, a short cylinder with a flange at one end adapted to be seated on the rim of a pipe bowl and a cartridge consisting of a short tube of glazed paper partly filled with tobacco, the unfilled end of said tube extending over said cylinder and having its lower end resting against said flange.
Signed at the city, county and State of New York this 24th day of May A. D. 1910.
ARTHUR FALK.
