To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, ARTHUR A. HAUE men, a citizen of the United States, and HUGH G. ALLAN, a subject of Great Britain, both residing at Stockton, in the county of San Joaquin, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tobacco-Pipe Fillers; and We do declare the following to be a clear, full, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appcrtains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the cha 'acters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this application.

This invention relates to improvements in a means and apparatus for use in connection with filling tobacco pipes with tobacco, the object of the invention being to produce an instrument by the use of which a pipe full of tobacco may be measured in the tobacco containing receptacle and from there carried and disposed or filled into the pipe in a neat and clean manner without any loss of the tobacco or any necessity of handling the same by the smoker. The instrument is thus both an economical and sanitary device, as will appear.

A. further object of the invention is to produce a simple and inexpensive device and yet one which will be exceedingly effective for the purposes for which it is designed.

These objects, we accomplish by means of such structure and relative arrangement of the parts as will fully appear by a perusal of the following specification and claims.

Figure 1 is a plan view of the device. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same taken on a line XX of Fig. 1.

Referring now more particularly to the characters of reference on the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the handle of the instrument which is preferably tubular and provided with an elongated slot 2 near one end. Screwed into the other end is a filler bowl 3 which is preferably cylindrical in shape and open at its outer end and designed as a sort of a hollow auger, the interior walls of which, as at 4, are knurled or roughened as shown. Mounted within the hollow handle 1 is a piston 5 provided taining receptacle and given a couple of turns. This auger-like construction then digs into the tobacco which fills into the interior of the member 3 and by reason of its texture will pack into the said member 3, this packing tendency being aided by reason of the roughened sides 4. When the member 3 is full of tobacco, the instrument is taken from the receptacle and placed in the bowl of the pipe and the finger member 6 is then operated to move the piston 5 against the spring 9, which action operates the plunger 8 to move against the tobacco in the member 3 and force it in a neat and compact mold into the bowl of the pipe. Upon the release of the member 6, the spring 9 returns the parts to normal position. The said plunger 8 is slightly convex, as shown in Fig. 2, so that when it tamps the tobacco, it will form the upper part of such tamped tobacco in sort of a concave shape so that when a match is applied to the same and it tends to loosen up as is the usual case, it will merely fill into the concave portion without loosening above the top edge of the pipe resulting in its loss, as is a very common occurrence.

The movement of the member 6 is limited by the length of the slot 2 so that the plunger 8 will merely move the length of the interior of the member 3.

From the foregoing description it will readily appear that we have produced an instrument for filling tobacco into pipes which will effect a saving of the tobacco and at the same time prevent the handling of the tobacco in an unsanitary manner. It will further be seen that we have produced such a device as substantially fulfils the objects of the invention as set forth herein.

While this specification sets forth in de tail the present and preferred construction of the device, still in practice, such deviations from such detail may be resorted to as do not form a departure from the spirit filler bowl and havinga stem projecting into said hollow handle member, and a finger member on said plunger projecting through said slot, as described.
