I SURGICAL APPLIANCE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 16, 1910.
Application filed September 25, 1907. Serial No. 394,462.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SMITH GALE Time, a citizen of the United States, residing at Akron, in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sur ical Appliances, and do declare that the fo lowing is a 'full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in surgical appliances, and consists of an elastic or expansible sleeve, preferably of rubber, adapted to be used both as an inclosing guard or shield and for purposes of medication, all substantially as shown and described and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of a plain sleeve or cot embodying my invention in its preferred form, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional elevation thereof showing antiseptic absorbent therein.
The said sleeve or cot A is designed to be molded out of rubber so as to be as thin and light and elastic as rubber gloves usually are found to be, much like a film of rubber, and in which form said sleeve has a rounded closed end or extremity 2, adapted to receive medicating and absorbent cotton, lint or the like indicated by 8, Fig. 2, for making local medicating applications according as conditions may demand or as a physician may require to relieve pain or promote heal ing, as well as to destroy disease germs in treated. Back from said rounded extremity or end portion 2 and at the base thereof I provide an annular bead, groove, channel or enlargement 4:, the channel therein being internal and said portion 4 taking on the form of a ring externally or about the sleeve. This portion also may be used for medicating purposes, but is more especially designed to provide a space in which to detain a germ killing absorbent or packing adapted to prevent discharges from a soreor wound from working or leaking out through the open end of the sleeve. Any suitable absorbent can be placed in this bead or channel with any suitable germ destroying preparation, and the expansibility of the rubber will permit the quantityof such absorbent material to be more or less largely increased according to conditions and the length of time thesleeve is to be worn before removal for cleansing or exchange. It is to be especially observed that annular channel, groove or enlargement 4 is wholly outside the radius of the rounded portions of the sleeve on either side thereof, and that the sleeve is contracted at 3 in respect to said enlargement 4 so as to make the enlargement a distinct receiving and confining space for absorbents' separate from said end 2 and the distended body 5 of the sleeve, which is more or less baggy and loose as shown. Finally, the sleeve is provided with a series of holes about its open contracted end'5 adapted to receive a cord or ribbon for gathering the said end closely together about the affected member and to secure it in wearing position.
What I claim is:-
A surgical appliance comprising an elastic sleeve having a distended body and a closed end and provided with an annular channel portion internally back from said end, the body and end being in open communication and of substantially the cross section shown to permit the part to be treated to extend beyond said channel into said closed end, in combination with a medicating ring removably confined within said channel and a removable and replaceable absorbent-filling within said end.
In testimony whereof I sign this specification in the presence of two witnesses.
