IMPRovjsMENT IN SELF-SUPPORTING FENCE.
I The Schedule referred to/,in these Letters Patent and making part of the same To all whom it may concern:
Bei it known that I, THOMAS FLINN, of Birmingham, in the county of Oakland, and the State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Portable Felices; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Figure `1 represents alwrspectire view of a section of a fence, as I propose to construct it;
Figure 2 is a portion of the cap, showing the angular lapjoint Figure 3 is a vertical section, on line a: x of tig. 4;
Figure 4 is a front elevation and Figure 5 isa bottom view ofthe posts, showing their tenons and the position of the shoulders with ret'erence to each other.
The same letters indicate the same' parts inthe several lignres. r
l\l y inreution relates'to portable felices, which are constructed in sect-ions; aml
My improvement consists in the atta-r-lnnent of the posts which support the bars ofthe fence to the basepla-tes, by which all nailing is avoided.
A, in the drawings, represents a. hase-plate of a fem-e, which is to be made `of suitable dimensions, so as to give a tirm support. tothe upright portions ofthe felice. A mortise'is to be cnt in the centre of the plate for'the reception ofthe tenons ot' the posts, to he. ot' thel sinne. width as the. tenons, its length being such, that when the posts haue been inserted, a space is left at one. end tor the receptionl of a key.
B B' represent the double posts ota fence, between which the bars are conlined. Tenons are to be formed at their lower ends, fitting into the mortises in their base-plate, to which they are secured by the wedge b and key b'. The position of the posts wit-h reference to each other is such, that the shoulder formed on the post B stands on the base in line with the mortise, while the shoulder on the right angle to the same.
C C represent the bars, the ends of which, in each section of fence, are to be formed as shown in lig. 4, so as to make a lap-joint. with the adjoining section. They-are to be secured between the d onble posts in any convenient unlnner.
D represents the cap, to which the top ends of the posts are firmly secured. The formation of the ends where the sections join is clearly shown in figf2.'
By the above-described construction and arrangement ot' the parts, a fence produced which may be readily taken apart and transported from one place to another, and which, when properly put up, combines strength and a neat appearance.
' Havhn,lr thus described my invention,
.Vhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isy The. combination of the base A, posts B, keys b', bars C, and cap D, all constructed and arranged substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to thi; specification, inthe presence of two subscribing witnesses. l
THOS. FLINN.
