BOTTLE-STOPPER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed November 5, 1909. Serial No. 526,438.
Io all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN HEDLUND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City', in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottle-Stoppers, of which the following is a specication.
My invention relates to improvements in bottle stoppers.
The object of my invention is to provide a cheap and durable bottle stopper having novel means by which air is admitted when fluid is poured from the bottle.
lThe novel features of my invention are hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings illustrative of the preferred form of my invention, Figure l is an elevation of my improved stopper mounted ina bottle the upper portion of which is shown in vertical section. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of my improved stopper, taken on the dotted line a-b of Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a top view of the stopper.

1 denotes an ordinary bottle in the neck of which is fitted the stopper, the body of which is denoted by 2. Fitted to the upper end of the body 2 is a cap 3 having an air inlet 4. An air inlet comprising a tube 5 extends through the body 2 longitudinally. A fluid outlet comprising a tube 6 extends through the body 2 longitudinally and also through the upper end of the cap 3. Preferably the lower endof the tube 5 and the upper end of the tube 6 are outwardly curved in opposite directions, and are vpreferably located in the same vertical plane as the air inlet 4, the upper end of the tube 5 being disposed intermediate the tube 6 and inlet 4. rI he upper end of the tube 5 communicates with a chamber 7 intermediate the upper end of the body 2 and cap 3 and which communicates with the inlet 4. Preferably the lower end of the tube 5 extends below the lower end of the tube 6. By reason of this the bottle l may be inverted to a greater extent without fluid passing from the bottle into the tube 5 than would be the case if the lower ends of both tubes terminated in the same horizontal plane. rlhe chamber 7 is provided so that in case fluid enters the tube 5 it will enter the chamber in which it will be held until the bottle has been replaced in the upright position, at which time it will renter the bottle through the tube 5. By placing the air inlet 4 out of longitudinal alinement with the tube 5, the fluid which passes upward into the chamber 7 through the tube 5 will not pass out the air inlet 4, but will flow in the chamber 7 toward the tube 6, which is lowermost during the operation of pouring from the bottle. By disposing the upper end of the tube 5 intermediate the tube 6 and the air inlet 4, fluid entering the chamber 7 through the tube 5 by careless manipulation of the bottle, will not pass from said chamber through the inlet 4. The extension of the tube 5 below the tube 6 also alfords means for obtaining good pressure for pouring rapidly, as a greater head of fluid is obtainable without danger of the fluid entering the tube 5. Lateral and outward curving of the lower end of the tube 5 also adds to this advantage. Preferably the tube 6 extends through the chamber 7 and is rigidly secured to the cap 3. The body 2 is preferably of resilient material, such as soft rubber, so that it will on compression in the neck of the bottle press against the tubes 5 and 6. The cap 3 serves also to limit the downward movement of the stopperA in the bottle.
In operating the invention, the bottle l is tilted with the tube 5 disposed above the discharge tube 6. rlhe fluid in the bottle will then pass therefrom through the tube 6, its place being taken by air entering the bottle through the inlet 4, chamber 7 and tube 5. As stated, if the bottle is carelesly inverted and a few drops of the fluid enters the tube 5, they will pass into chamber 7 and collect around the tube 6, thus permitting air to enter through the inlet 3. When the bottle is again placed in the upright position the fluid in chamber 7 will reenter the bottle through the tube 5.
I do not limit my invention to the structure shown and described, as various modifications of it, within the scope of the appended claims, may be made without departing from its spirit.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A bottle stopper comprising a body having an air inlet and an outlet for fluid extending longitudinally therethrough, and a cap fitted to the upper end of the body Patented July 5, 1910.
and provided with an air inlet, a chamber being provided intermediate the upper end of the body and cap and communicating with said two air inlets.
2. A bottle stopper comprising a body having an air inlet and an outlet for fluid extending longitudinally therethrough, and a cap fitted to the upper end of the body and provided with an air inlet, a chamber being provided intermediate the upper end of the body and Cap and communicating with said two air inlets, the inlet in the body being disposed intermediate the said outlet and the other inlet.
3. A bottle stopper comprising a bod having an air inlet and an outlet for fluid extending longitudinally therethrough, the lower end of the inlet being extended below the lower end of the outlet, and a cap fitted to the upper end of the body and provided with an air inlet, a chamber being provided intermediate the upper end of the body and the cap and communicating with said two inlets.

a cap fitted to the upper end of the body, and having an air inlet extending through its upper end out of longitudinal alinement with the inlet in the body, a Chamber being provided intermediate the upper end of the body and Cap and communicating with said two inlets.
5. A bottle stopper comprising a body having an air inlet and an outlet for fluid extending longitudinally therethrough, the lower end of the inlet extending below the lower end of the outlet, and a. cap fitted to the upper end of' the body and provided with an air inlet, a Chamber being provided interrnediate the upper end of the body and the cap and vcommunicating with said two air inlets, the upper end of the air inlet in the body being intermediate the other inlet and the outlet and out of longitudinal alinenient with the other inlet.
