Description

AAAAAAAAAAA G. PPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP 9.

GEORGE C. HICKS, JR., OF CONNERSVILLE, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR TO THE P. H. & F. M. ROOTS COMPANY, OF CONNERSVILLE, INDIANA.
SHAFT-BEARING.
Application filed June 21, 1909.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE C. HICKS, J r., a citizen of the United States, residing at (Jonnersville, Fayette county, Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shaft-Bearings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention, pertaining to shaft bearings, is particularly adapted for use in situations requiring accurate adjustment of a bearing as, for instance, the impeller shafts of rotary blowers and pumps.
The improved bearing will be readily understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing which is a face elevation of a bearing exemplifying my improvement, the shaft appearing in vertical transverse section.
In the drawing :1, indicates a pedestal, typifyiug any suitable fixed base structure to carry the bearing: 2, the jaws of the pedestal: 3, the bed-box vertically adjustable in the jaws: t, a wedge disposed in the pedestal underneath the bed-box and typifying ordinary means for the vertical adjustment of the bed-box: 5, the pedestal cap, rigidly secured to the top of the pedestal jaws: 6, bolts firmly uniting the cap to the tops of the jaws 7 the upper portions of the inner faces of the pedestal jaws, these portions of the faces converging downwardly: 8, two boxsections disposed over the shaft and under the cap and free from each other, their outer surfaces engaging the converging portions 7 of the inner faces of the pedestal jaws: and 9, setscrews threaded through the cap and impinging on the top of the box-see tions and typifying means by which the boxsections may be adjusted downwardly independent of each other.
That feature of the construction characterized by a bed-box vertically adjustable in Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 503,339.
pedestal jaws by means of a wedge or other contrivance, is well known, and the illustrated wedge, if employed as the means for adjusting the bed-box may be provided with any of the usual adjusting means. The bedbox is incidentally illustrated as that form usually employed in bearings of the ring or chain oiling type, but no attention need be given to this feature. By adjusting the bed-box upwardly or downwardly the shaft may be adjusted vertically, and by independently adjusting the two box-sections they may be brought to proper bearing on the shaft, the general adjustment being much more satisfactory than the usual arrangement employing a bed-bearing, a topbearing and quarter-boxes.
I claim A shaft bearing comprising a pedestal provided with jaws having the lower portions of their inner surfaces parallel with each other and having the upper portions of their inner surfaces converging downwardly, a bed-box fitting the parallel portion of the inner surfaces of the jaws, means for adjusting the bed-box vertically in the jaws, a cap bridging the top of the pedestal and having members engaging the outer faces of the jaws, means for securing the cap to the jaws, box-sections having shaft-fitting sur faces and disposed between the cap and the bed-box and having outer surfaces engaging the converging surfaces of the jaws, and screws seated in the cap and engaging the box sections and acting vertically to adjust the box sections independently in relation to the shaft.
