Description

tanica gaat@ @anni dijiiw.
Letters .Patent No. 96,141, dated October 26, 1869; antedcted October 12, 1869.
IIMPROVED SACCHARINE' EV/APORATOR.
'21m Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and. -making paxt of the same.
To all 'whom 'it lnul/y concern Y Be it known that I, RICHARD ORFORD, of Dewagiac, Michigan, have invented a new and improved Method of Constructing Furnaces, and of Arranging the Fines and Dampers of Saccharine Evaporators; and I do 'hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, makinga part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a side view, and Figure 2 is a detached section, showing the arrangement of the i'lues and dampers, and method of lining the furnace.
The nature of my invention consists in so arranging thejlues and dempers as to avoid the danger of b urning the sirup or sugar, to a greatextent; and in fastening the brick or mason-work of furnaces without using mortar; and, also, in providing adjustable legs,`
The dampers are connected by means ofthe bar' G,-
causing a simultaneous act-ion ofthe dampers E Fas the bar G is moved, by which means both ends' of the flue O are closed at once, thus preventing the heat from passing under the rear ofthe pan A, which it could do if the rear end of the flue C were not'closed, and
more eeotually excludes the heat than could be done with a single damper.
H is a thin bar of iron, covering the joints in the blick or stone lining to the furnace B, fastened by means of bolt-s or rivets j j, passing through between --the brick k k, and through the4 sides ofthe furnace B,
for the purpose of holding the brick or mason-Work of the furnace more securely than could be done by mortar. The bars H may be replaced, when burned out, by new ones.
S are brackets, fastened to the sidesof the furnace, with projections at the top to support the pan.
aa are legs, provided with broad feet, attached with swivel-joints, and screw into projections on the brackets S, and may be convenientlylcngthened or shortened, in order to level the evaporator.
. AX is a gripe, for the purpose of supporting the centre of the furnace, and for holding the pan from-springing up.
Having thus described my invention,
VVllat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination and arrangement of the furnace B, with its bars H, rivets j, 'dampers E and F, brackets S, and bar G, with the pan A of ai saccharine evaporator.
In Vtestimony thatv I ela-im the foregoing, I have .hereunto set my hand, this 15th day of October, 1868.
, RICHARD ORFORD. Witnesses:
S. H. WHEELER, HENRY MICHAEL.
