JAMES M. BAKER, or AURORA, ILLINOIS."
Letters Patent No. 95,967, dated October 19, 1869.
STOVE-PIPE DAMPER The Schedule referred to inthese Letters Patent and making paxt of the same To all whom it may concern Figure 1 is a sectional front elevation of a stovepipe, showing my. improved damper in place;
Figure 2 is a vertical section of the same on the line :2: a; of fig. l; and
Figure 3 is.a vertical section of the damper on the line 3 y of fig. 2.
Letters of like name and'kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.
The object of my invention is to furnish a simple and cheap stove-pipe damper, which may be readily adjusted to any portion of a pipe, and secured in place at any desired angle with the line of said pipe; and to this end, i
It consists in the construction of the damper, andin the form and method of applying the adjustable pivot, and further, in the employment of a toothed segment, with which a crank, secured to and forming a part of said adj nstable pivot, is made to engage, and, in connection therewith, in the employment of an in- 'clined slot within which saidpivot rests, as is hereinafter fully set forth.
In the annexed drawing A represents the stove-pipe, having pivotedtherein a damper, B, provided with a permanent and an ad .just-able pivot, C and D, respectively.
The adjustable pivot D is enlarged; and flattened from the point where it enters the damper B, the lattrr of which has three or more transverse cuts, somewhat longer than the width of the enlarged portion of the pivot, between which the sections of metal 7) are corrugated or bentoutward, alternately, in opposite directions, so as to permit said enlarged portion 11 to pass between.
In order to permit the damper to be placed within the pipe, two holes, for the reception of the pivots G and D, are provided in opposite sides of said pipe, one of said holes being round, while the other is elongated, so as to permit of the passage of the enlarged or flattened portion 11 of the pivot I). a I
If now the disk B be placed within the pipe, the pivot O inserted in the round hole, and said disk held in position,'the flattened end of the pivot D may be readily passed through the elongated opening. in said pipe and inserted in place within the disk.
Secured to the side of the pipe, directly beneath the adjustable pivot- D, is a metal strip, E, which extends upward, outward, and again upward, as shown in fig. 2.
The upper part of this strip is extended to one side in the form of a quadrant, E, and has upon the semicircular portion thereof, a series of notches, e, which receive the horizontal portion of a crank-handle, F, secured toand forming a part of the pivot D.
The pivot D extends through the pipe into the strip,
E,'and rests in the lower end of a slot-,G, which inclines upward at an angle of forty-five degrees or thereabouts.
The opening in the pipe being correspondingly elongated, it will be seen that the pivot I) and the front end of the damper can be raised, so as to release the handle F from engagement with the teeth of the quadrant, and permit said damper to be adjusted to the desired angle with reference to the pipe, after which, upon releasing said handle, 'the pivot and damper return to their former position, and the bandle is again caused to engage with the quadrant, firmly locking said damper in place.
As thus constructed, the: device consists of three pieces only, the damper, the adjustable pivot and handle combined, and the lock strip, all of which may be .cast, so as to require no fitting up, and as the whole can be applied to or removed from a pipe in afew minutes, it is believed that the damper can be furnished at a cost not exceeding those of ordinary construction.
The advantages possessed by a damper, which, While readily adjusted to any desired position, is at other times immovable, are so obvious as notto. require enumeration, and when to these qualities is added that of cheapn'ess, it isbelieved that its general use is certain.
- Having thus fully setforth the nature and merits of my improvement,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure b Letters Patent, is-
The disk B, provided with the corrugated sections b and with the fixed pivot O, in combination with the removable pivot D, provided with the enlarged and flattened portion 11, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
Also, the means employed for adjusting the damper to and seeming it in position, consisting of theiquadrant E, provided with the notches c,.and'with the inclined slot G, and the pivot 1), provided with the crank-handle F, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for thepnrpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand, this 10th day of September, 1869.
. V JAS. M. BAKER. Witnesses ALLEN FRIsBEE, EDGAR G. RICE.
