To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMES ORLAND BECI-I DoL'r, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Portland, in the county of Jay and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hog-Holders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to hog holders and has for its object to provide a device of the character referred to-embodying in connection with a suitable handle a flexible and extensible band combined with operating means therefor and employed in connection with a snout block, whereby the band may be quickly clamped around the snout of a hog and drawn taut to securely hold the animal.

Vith the above and other objects in View the invention consists in the novel construction combination and arrangement of parts herein fully described illustrated and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of the improved holder. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 8 is a detail perspective view of the snout block.

Referring to the drawings 1 designates a tubular handle of any suitable length in which is mounted a slide rod 2 provided at one end with an operating handle 3 and provided at the opposite end with an eye or aperture 4.

5 designates a flexible band which may consist of a suitable length of wire having one end securely fastened through the eye 4: of the slide rod 2.

6 designates a snout block provided with a tubular boss 7 internally bored as at 8 to receive and fit upon one end of the tubular handle 1 to which it is secured by means of a rivet 9 or its equivalent. The snout block thus rigidly secured to and around the tubular handle 1, is provided with an oblique guideway 10 through which the adjacent end portion of the band 5 is adapted to slide freely as the rod 2 is moved lengthwise within the handle 1. In other words, the snout block has a continuous passage into one end of which the handle 1 fits so that the bore of the handle forms with the 0b operating rod 2 and the movable end of the band 5. By having the guide-way disposed obliquely to the axis of the handle 1 or at I ceive the other end of the flexible band 5 which is secured therein in any suitable manner as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings. The snout engaging face forms in effect a part of a continuous ring, the .maj or portion of which consists of the band, and because of the peculiar construction of the block and relation of the band thereto, a firm hold can be obtained on the snout.

In operation, the handle 1 is grasped in one hand and the other handle 3 is grasped in the other hand. Sufficient slack is given to the band 5 to enable it to be placed around the snout of the hog, and as soon as this is effected, the slide bar 2 is drawn outward so as to close the band 5 holding it tightly around the snout thereby obtaining a secure hold on the animal, the snout block 6 forming a rest for the animals snout while the oblique guideway 10 provides for a smooth and easy sliding action of the band 5 through the snout block.

I claim 1. A hog holder comprising a tubular handle, a snout block having a passage extending entirely through the same and into one end of which the handle is secured, the remaining portion of the passage being disposed obliquely to the axis of the handle and at an acute angle to the snout engaging face of the block and cooperating with the bore of the handle rod to form a continuous guide-Way, a slide rod movable longitudinally in the handle and terminating short of the snout block, an approximately circular flexible band having one end connected with the snout block at one side of the axis of the handle and the other end extending into the guide-way of the snout block at a point disposed to the opposite side of the axis of the handle and connected with the slide rod, the snout engaging face of the block cooperating with the band to form substantially a continuous snout engaging means.

2. A hog holder comprising a tubular handle, a snout block having a passage composed of two portions, one arranged approximately at right-angles to the snout engaging face of the block and the other at an acute angle thereto, means for securing the handle in the first mentioned portion of the passage of the block, whereby the second mentioned portion of the passage cooperates with the bore of the handle to form a continuous guide-Way, the obliquely disposed portion of the passage having its open end terminating in the snout engaging face of the block at one side of the axis. of the handle said block having a lateral projection disposed at the opposite side of the axis of the handle from the said open end of the passage, a flexible band having one end secured to the extremity of the projection and the other end slidably extending into the passage of the block, and an operating rod slidable 1n the handle and connected With the.n1ovable end of the band, the portions of the band adjacent the block being disposed approximately in tangential relation to the snout engaging face of the block.
