Description

J. W. CURRY.
IMPLEMENT FOR REMOVING NESTS OR THE LIKE.
APPLICATION FILED nscTn. 1915.
Patented Sept. 12, 1916.
An e E: um
Smawtoz J. W CURRY Guam;
QFFIQEQ JOHN W. CURRY, OF WOLFEBORO, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
IMPLEMENT FOR REMOVING NESTS OR THE LIKE.
Application filed December 11, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN W. CURRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wolfeboro, in the county of Carroll and State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Implements for Removing Nests or the like, of which the following is a specification, refer ence being had to the accompanying drawmgs.
This invention relates to an implement for removing nests or the like and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character of a portable nature and which may be manually operated with convenience and facility.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved implement whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the inventionwill be carefully defined in the appended claims.
In order that my invention may be better understood I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a view in front elevation with a portion in section of an implement constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention, and Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation of the device as disclosed in Fig. 1.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, 1 denotes an elongated member or rod of predetermined dimensions and having one extremity enlarged to form a head i and secured to the opposite edges of the head are the clamping jaws A to be hereinafter more particularly described.
3 denotes an operating knob suitably secured to the lower extremity of the rod i disposed through the guide eyes 5 carried by the member 1 and whereby said rod 4 is capable of reciprocal movement in substantially a fixed path of travel.
Each of the jaws A, hereinbefore referred to, comprises a resilient shank 6 suitably anchored to the upper end of the member 1 and having its outer end provided with the head 7 preferably of substantially oval formation with its greatest diameter disposed substantially longitudinally of the member Specification of Letters Patent.
PatentedSept. 12, 1916.
Serial No. 66,359.
1 and the inner face of the head is concave so that efiective engagement may be had with a nest or the like.
The shanks 6 of the jaws are embraced by the eyes 9 overlying the adjacent end of the elongated member or rod 1 and formed on the upper extremity of the divergent arms 10 carried by the upper end of the rod 4 and it is to be noted that the shanks 6 are bowed outwardly whereby it will be perceived that upon endwise movement being imparted to the rod 4 in one direction, the jaws A will be forced one toward the other in order to effectively clamp a nest or the like and it will also be readily understood that the inherent resiliency possessed by the shanks 6 will cause the jaws A to automatically separate when the rod 4- is moved in an opposite direction whereby the nest or the like engaged or clamped between the jaws A will be released, although it will be self-evident that the shanks A will be positively caused to sep-' arate when the rod 4 is retracted.
It is to be noted that the eyes 9 are relatively spaced apart a distance less than the width of the adjacent end of the head 1 and that the rod 4 is arranged at substantially the transverse center of the head, whereby it is assured that the heads 7 will properly 00- act. It is also to be noted that when the rod,
4 is at the limit of its downward movement and the heads 7 consequently at the limit of separation, the heads 7 are arranged longitudinally on such relative angle as to assure the outer edges ofthe heads to coact in such a manner as to afford a cutting action which is assured by the fact that when the rod 4: is pushed outwardly to close the heads 7, that said heads 7 will not have contact through out their longitudinal dimension, but only at the outer ends.
My present invention is particularly adapted for use in removing moth nests from trees and while I have used it with advantage for this particular purpose, I wish to be understood that my invention as herein embodied may be employed for other purposes if desired.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that an implement constructed in accordance with my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modfication without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice.
What is claimed is:
An implement of the character described comprising an elongated member, having one end portion enlarged, resilient shanks secured to the opposite edges of the enlarged portion of the member and erminating in heads, each of said shanks being outwardly bowed, a rod carried by the member and capable of endwise movement, one end of said rod being provided with divergent arms terminating in eyes through which the shanks are directed, said eyes overlying the adja- Gcpies of this patent may be obtained for tive planes as to cause the outer ends only of the heads to contact when the shanks are forced inwardly upon the outward movement of the rod.
In testimony whereof I hereunto ailix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN W. CURRY.
