Be it known that I, EDGAR JAY, traveler, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, and residing at 16 Albion Buildings, Aldersgate Street, London, E. (3.,

England, have invented Improvements in Letter Books and Albums, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to books for taking press copies of letters, accounts, statements and other documents and has for its object to simplify and reduce the labor involved in copying two or more letters simultaneously.

Letter copying books as usually constructed are made of a number of sheets of tissue or buff copying paper bound together in the usual manner, that is to say the sheets of paper are attached to the binding by the left hand edges of said sheets, and in order to copy several letters simultaneously it is necessary to wet several sheets at a time, or to use damping sheets. This method of wetting several sheets at a time involves a loss of time in separating the wet sheets before inserting the letters or other documents between them, while the damping sheet process involves the labor of placing two sheets in the book for each letter to be copied, viz: the document and the damping sheet, and the object of this invention is to obviate or overcome these imperfections. And in order to clearly understand my invention reference is made to the accompanying sheet of drawings in which Figure 1 is a plan of a copying book having four sections, the same being in their open or extended position, and Fig. 2 is a side View of the same. Fig. 3 is an end View of Fig. 1. Fig. l is an end view showing the book folded or in its closed position.

According to this invention the said improved letter copying book which is of a folding type is constructed of any convenient number of sections each of which contains a suitable number of leaves bound together at the top instead of at the left hand edges as is usual. One of the sections is attached to the inside of the cover or binding of the book while the other sections, each of which is provided with a cardboard or other stiff backing, are connected to the aforesaid section and to each other by broad tapes or strips of textile material.

The invention is also applicable to albums for holding postcards, photographs, postage stamps and other articles requiring the collection or exhibition of the same under different classes or designs.

In constructing the said books the leaves forming each section are bound together at their upper edges by the strip or tape 6 of textile material folded over the same and attached to the cardboard or other stilf backs d.

When copying letters the sections are on tended and an oil sheet is placed under each sheet to be damped. The copying sheets are then damped and blotted and a document placed under each damp sheet in each section. The sections are then folded up and the book closed and placed in the press in the usual manner. The first two sections are connected together at their edges by a broad tape or strip 6, as shown in Fig. 4, attached to the center of the second section at e, to insure easy folding of the said sections.

The invention is also applicable to books other than letter copying books, such as ledgers, analysis books, and note books, and in other cases where it is desired to show more than two or more pages at once or whereby this method of binding can be utilized.

Having now fully described the nature of my said invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A book comprising a plurality of sections each containing a number of leaves bound together at one end, one section being fixed at its binding edge to one of the covers of the book, stiif backings fixed in a similar manner to the other sections and flexible my hand in the presence of two witnesses. strips or tapes connectlng the baokings together at their meeting edges, the section ad EDGAR 5 joining the cover being attached to the same Witnesses:
