No. 394,516. Patented Dec. 11, 1888.

J OHN EVARTS SPEARS, OF HOLYOKE, MASSACHUSETTS.
SAM PLE-BOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 394,516, dated December 11, 1888.
Application filed June 13, 1887. Serial No. 241,100. (No model.)
To all 107L077 it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN EvARTs SPEARs, of Holyoke, county of Hampden, and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Sample-Books, of which the follow- 1 ing description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
F other suitable material.
; ing provided with saw-cuts b, and secured to This invention relates to a sample or invoice book, and has for its object to provide a guard at the back of the book, whereby samples of goods or papers placed between the leaves may be offset, so that when the book is closed the covers of the book may lie substantially parallel.
In accordance with my invention the body of the book is made up of sections, each section being composed of two or more sheets, which are first folded to form leaves, the said sheets at their back or folded side being crimped or made with two substantially narrow folds to constitute a guard. The guard lies at one side of each section, and will preferably have inserted between its component folds a re-enforcing strip or packing, which may be of varying thickness to accommodate variance in the thickness of the sample of goods or the papers placed between the leaves of the sections.
The particular features in which my invention consist-s will be pointed out in the claims at the end of this specification.
Figure 1 is a perspective view, broken off, of a section made in accordance with my invention, the guard having a re-enforcing strip or packing; Fig. 2, an end view of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, an end view of a section with the re-enforcing strip or packing removed; Fig. 4, a perspective of a single sheet, and Fig. 5 an end view of a completed book.
The body of the book is made up of sections A, each composed, preferably, of two or more independent sheets. (See Fig. 4.) Each sheet is folded to form leaves a a, and at its back or folded side or edge each sheet is crimped or made with two substantially narrow folds,
5 strips or bands, (not shown,) as now commonly practiced in book-binding, the covers I) b and back If being of any desired material.
Among other uses my improved book may be employed as an invoice-book, and more particularly as a sample-book, the samples of goods being placed between the leaves of the book.
\Vhen used as a sample-book, the re-enforcing strip may be employed to advantage, as it increases the size of the guard, so that samples of goods of considerable thickness may be placed in the book, and yet have the covers I) I) lie substantially parallel; but when the book is used as an invoice or scrap or file book the re-enforcing strip may be omitted and the guard alone depended upon to separate the sections at the back of the book to offset the material placed between the leaves, as shown in Fig. 3.
I claim 1. The herein-described sample or invoice book, composed of independent sections A, each consisting of a folded sheet provided with a guard integral therewith, formed by folding the said sheet twice upon itself at its folded edge, the guard having a re-enforcing strip or packing, B, inserted between the outer folds forming the said guard, substantially as described.
2. The herein-described sample or invoice book, composed of independent sections A, each made of a plurality of independent adjacent folded sheets A, provided with substantially narrow outwardly-turned folds a a at the folded edge of the said sheets, the said narrow folds, when the sheets are put together to form a section, forming a guard, for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
J. EVARTS SPEARS.
