Letters PatentNo. 94,986, dated September 21,1869. I i I STOVE-PIPE DAMPER.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
scription, in which I Figure 1 is a perspective representation of my improvenient, as it is arranged to operate with a joint of-pipe. 4
I Figure 2, an elevation of the inside of the disk, which, together with a spur'ou the handle of the damper-rod, holdsthe damper in position. Figure 3, a vertical centralsection of the improve-- ment, with a portion of the damper-plate broken The. present invention relates to an improvement in that class of dampers which, when properlyadj ustedin the pipe, are so locked in place that the draught may not beincreased or diminished; and its nature consists in providing the spur which holds'the handle ot' the damper-rod to a disk, with aspheiical knob,
whereby, when the knob is put'thr'ough the disk, the
damper will be held in a fixed position; and further, in the peculiar construction of the disk, and the manner of fastening it to the pipe, the whole operating in combination, as hereinafter fully described.
I 0 represents an ordinary damper-rod, which is provided with a handle, D, and fastened to a sheet-metal damper, B, the opposite end of' the rod from handle I) having cast solid to ita spherical knob, E, which prevents the rod from being accidentally drawn outof the pipe A. v
The handle Dis provided with a spur, F, which is arranged to pass through any one of ,theholcs I in a disk, H. A spherical knob, G, being cast solid to the through the pipe A and end of the spur, holds the latter in the hole in which it is put, unless it is purposely removed, as when the damper is being set on a difl'erent angle in the pipe A. The hole in the pipe A being alittle larger than the damper-rod 0 allows the spur F to bear on the. metal surrounding the openings I, and consequently bring the knob G below the hole I, inany position the spur may have on the disk H. 'lhis disk is made of sheet-metal, and it is so formed where the holes I are made through it, as toprovide a recess to receive the knob G, and it is so cut through its central part as to form triangular pieces, V V V V, fig. 2, which are put J .J fig.'3, to hold the disk in place.
By means of this constructionand arrangement,-
the damper B is held on any angle corresponding to the number of holes Iin the disk, and is operated much more conveniently than when a spring is used on the end E, to draw a pointed spur against a notched disk.
The operation is very simple, requiring only to adjust the damper B, that the knob G on spur}? be drawn out of one hole I, and put into another, the. labor todo this beingso light as not to injure the hand with heat.
Having thus described my invention,
,XVhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
lhesheet-metal disk H, provided with a recess inside of the holes I, to receive the knob G, in combi nation with the spur F, handle I damper B, and damper-rod O, the latter being provided with a knob, E, to hold it in the'pipe A, andthe whole being constructed and arranged as and for the purpose set forth.
