EBEN WEBSTER, OF HO LLAND, MICHIGAN" Letters Patent No. 70,659, dated November 5, 1867.
STOVE-PIPE DRUM.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, EBEN WEBSTER, of Holland, in the county of Ottawa, and State of Michigan, have invented-anew and useful Improvement in Stove-Pipe Drum; and I do hereby declare that the following is full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art, to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which-j Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section of my improved stove-drum, taken through the line 3/ 3 fig. 2.
Figure 2 is a horizontal-cross-section of the same, taken through the line a: x, fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts. i
My invention has. for its object to furnish an improved stove-drum, so constructed and arranged as to obstruct the escape of the heat into the chimney, and cause it to be radiated through the room, which also acts as a damper to regulate the draught of the stove, and which is a complete spark-arrester; and it consists in the combination, with an enlarged section of the pipe, of two inverted cones placed one within the other, and constructed, arranged, andoperated as hereinafter more fully described.
A is an'e'nlarged section of the stove pipe, which, for -an ordinary stove, maybe from eight to fourteen inches in diameter, and about two and a half feet long. To the lower end of the cylinder A is attached a cap, a, with which the pipe leading from the stove is connected, and to the upper end of which is attached a cap, a, with which the pipe leading to the chimney is connected. B is an iziverted cone, the base of which is securely riveted to the upper part of the cylinder or drum A, as shown in the drawings. 0 is an inverted cone fitting into the cone B, as shown iu figs. 1 and 2. To the base of the cone 0 is securely riveted a ring or band, 0, which rests and slides upon the base of the cone B, as shown in fig. 1. Dis a handle passing in through a slot in the cylinder A, and attached to the cone 0 above the base of the cone B. Through the sides of thecones B and C are formed holes or openings, which are so arranged that when the handle D is at one end of the slot,'.in
which it works, the openings in the two cones will exactly coincide, and when the handle D is moved to the other end of the said slot, the said openings will be completely closed. This construction enables the cones to act as dampers to adjust the draught of the stove, as required. The .points of the cones B and C are cut oil, as shown in fig. 1, to allow the stove, when the openings through the cones are completely closed, to have a sufficient draught to carry off the gas and prevent its escape into the room, and also to allow the ashes that may be carried into the said cones to fall back into the stove. The sparks that may be carried into the drum strike against the inclined sides of the cone B and fall back into the stovc,-thus preventing their escape into the chimney. I
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The construction of the inverted, conical, slotted cone B, secured at its base to the inner circumference of the drum A, and containing the inverted, conical, slotted cone 0, whose apex extends slightly through the apex-of the outer cone B, and to whose base the short cylinder is secured, having an outer ring resting and supported upon the flattened base of the cone B, sliding freely thereon, all 'arranged'and operating as described, for the purpose specified. I
2. The inverted slotted cone B, whose base supports the inner slotted cone 0, by the ring around its base,
turning freely thereon, the inner cone extending above and below the outer cone, as herein shown and described.
. a EBEN WEBSTER.
