COMBINED CONTAINER AND GRATING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed November 15, 1909.
Patented Feb. 15, 1910.
Serial No. 528,168.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHRISTINA WINLACK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Niles, county of Berrien, and State of Michigan, have invented an Improved Combined Container and Grating Device, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a combined nutmeg container and grater, and the object of the invention is the provision of a device of such character which will be efficient in use, and of durable and economical construction.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
With these objects in view my invention consists in a device characterized as above mentioned and in certain details of construction and arrangement of parts all as will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
My invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure l is a perspective view of my device in closed position, Fig. 2 is a perspective view thereof in open or operative position, and Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the device as arranged in Fig. 1.
Referring now to the drawings, l indicates the body of the device which as shown is simply a cylindrical receptacle or can open at its upper end, the same being preferably formed of suitable sheet metal. Provided upon one side of said body is a suitable handle 2 and arranged in the opposite side thereof a plurality of perforations 3, the ragged bur forming edges 4: of which constitute an effectual grating surface.
Having its lower extremities swingingly secured by a hinge 5 to the lower end of the body l is a concave plate 6, the same being of a curvature such as to adapt the same, when elevated to contact with the body l, to conform exactly with the lateral curvature of the latter. Said plate is substantially coextensive in length with the body l, the same being so positioned thereon and of such width, as to be adapted, when elevated to contact with said body, (as shown in Fig. l) to completely cover the perforations 3 to serve as a closure therefor as shown in Secured by a hinge 7 to the plate 6 adjacent the upper or outer extremity thereof, is a cap or cover S. Said cover is so arranged and is of such dimensions that, when arranged in embracing position upon the upper end of the body l as when closing the mouth thereof, the same will also engage the upper extremity of the plate (i, as clearly shown in Fig. l, to securely hold the latter in the closing position upon the body 1 bcfore described.
NVith the provision of a device of a construction as shown and described, upon dcsiring to use the same for grating, it is only required to remove the cap 8 from the body l to swing the same together with the plate (3 to the position as shown in Fig. 2. Now, when the nut-megs or other articles to be grated are drawn over the grating surface of the body in the usual manner, the gratings or portions removed from the latter, will be forced through the openings 3 into the interior of said body, whence the desired quantity thereof may be readily removed or poured out, the remainder or that not used being permitted to remain in said body. Vhen through grating and after removing the desired quantity of gratings from the body l, the cap 8 may be replaced, such replacement also effecting, as before stated, the closing positioning of the plate 6, and whereby the gratings contained in the body will be held against escapement therefrom, the cap serving as a. closure for the mouth thereof, and the plate preventing escapement through the perforations 3.
l/Vhile I have shown what I deem to be the preferable form of my device I do not wish to be limited thereto as there might be various changes made in the details of construction and the arrangement. of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention comprehended within the scope of the appended claims. And although I have designed my device with special reference to the grating and containing of nut-megs the salue may be used in a similar capacity with reference to any other similar article to which it is applicable.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A device of the class described comprising a receptacle open at its upper end, one side of said receptacle being provided with a perforated grating surface, a plate swingingly secured to said body adapted to close the perforations in said grating surface, and a closure for said receptacle adapted to hold said plate in closing position, substantially as described.
2. A device of the class described coniprisinga receptacle open at its upper end, one side of said receptacle being provided with a perforated grating surface, a plate swingingly secured to said body adapted to close the perforations in said grating surface, and a closure for said receptacle carried by said plate adapted when arranged upon said body to hold said plate in closing position, substantially as described.
3. A device of the class described coniprising a handled receptacle open at its upper end, one side of said receptacle being provided with a perforated grating surface, a plate having its lower end hingedly secured to said body, said plate being adapted to close the perforations in said grating surface, and a flanged closure for said receptacle hingedly secured to said plate, said closure being adapted when arranged upon said body to hold said plate in closing position, substantially as described.
l. A device of the class described coinprising a cylindrical receptacle open at its upper end, a handle provided upon said receptacle, the side of said receptacle opposite said handle being formed into a perforated grating surface, a longitudinally extending curved plate coeXtensive in length with said receptacle having its lower end hinged to said body, said plate being adapted to cover said grating surface to close the perforations therein, and a flanged closure for said receptacle hinged to said plate adjacent the upper end thereof, said closure being adapted when arranged upon said body to embrace the upper end of said plate to hold the latter in closing position, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed iny naine to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHRISTINA WINLACK.
