AMOS KISSINGER, OF READING, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR 0F ONE-HALF T0 HENRY FOCHT, OF READING, PENNSYLVANIA.
SASI-I-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 8, 1910.
Application filed September 21, 1909. Serial No. 518,784.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AMos KIssINoER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Reading, in the county of Berks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to fasteners for the meeting rails of window sashes and my object is to provide a lock of simplified construction and neat appearance, preferably made largely from stamped sheet metal, the strike-engaging lever of which is adapted to permit the greatest possible swing about the pivot post in the locking movement so as to more certainly secure the tight clamping together of the sashes, while providing in a simple manner for positively limiting its swing in the unlocking movement.
The accompanying drawings illustrate my invention and the novel features are particularly pointed out in the claims.
Figure 1 is a plan view of my sash fastener showing the locking lever moved into engagement with the strike member. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an end view of the strike; and Fig. 4 is a View of the sheet metal blank from which the strike is formed.
As shown in the drawings 1 is a locking lever formed with a handle 2, strike engaging cam portion 3 and a pivoting hub portion 4:.
5 is a base plate, preferably stamped from sheet metal and provided with screw-apertures 6 and 7 and a pivot post aperture 8.
The locking lever hub portion 4 is formed with a central bore 9 having a bottom coun ter bore 10 for the reception of a spiral spring 11.
12 is a headed pivot post which is passed through bore 9 of the locking lever and fastened 1n aperture 8 of the base plate 5 to pivotally secure the locking lever 1 to the base plate against the tension of spring 11, which seats on said base plate and against the shoulder formed in the hub portion 4.- by the counter bore 10. The lever 1 as shown and described is thus free to swing on its pivot, the tension of spring 11 holding it at rest in any position, and its turning movement be ing only limited by contact with the shank portion 15 of the strike member at the eX- tremity of its locking movement, and by a stop against which it will contact at the eX- tremity of its unlocking movement. This stop, as shown, is preferably provided by using a headed screw 13 in the screw aperture 7 against which the handle 1 strikes and prevents the accidental projection of the lever over the edge of the sash when unlocked.
The strike is preferably made from sheet metal cut lnto requisite shape by suitable dles and bent up into proper form. The blank from which this strike is formed is shown in Fig. 4, the shank portion 15 bein bent up at right angles on the dotted line indicated and the upper end 16 turned over to form a hooked end for engagement with the locking lever cam 3. The portion 17 forms a base plate and is provided with screw apertures 18 to secure it to the sash. l have found it desirable both for the appearance of the strike and for the purpose of bringing the shank portion 15 of the locking hook nearer to the screw holes 18 to secure a more vertical strain upon the screws, to cut the base plate 17, as at 1919, and bend the shank portion 15 along a line connecting the bottoms of these cuts. This setting in of the shank portion from the outer edge of the base plate provides sufficient width of the latter to give it a firm foundation on the sash and brings the liftlng strainon the hooked end 16 close to the shank portion and directly over the screws.
I am aware that numerous devices have been designed to lock the meeting rails of window sashes, but my improved construction provides a most effective lock of neat appearance and capable of being made up with a minimum amount of labor and expense, while the locking lever 1 being unlimited in its swing about the pivot post 12 in the locking movement, excepting by contact with the shank of the strike, permits the sashes to be firmly clamped together by the turning of the lever until the hooked end 16 is tightly engaged, even when an excessive movement is required to effect this purpose. And my sheet metal strike member provides for a simple and effective strike of neat appearance and cheap construction.
What I claim is 1. In a sash fastener the combination with a strike member, of a locking member comprising a base plate, a cam lever having a pivoting hub seating on said plate and a bottom counterbore in said hub having a spiral friction spring located therein, and a headed pivot post for said lever rigidly secured to said plate the movement of said lever being positively limited in one direction by a stop provided on said plate and in the other direction by contact with the shank portion of the strike.
2.111 a sash fastener the combination with a locking member having a pivoted cam lever, of a strike member formed of sheet metal and having a base-plate portion and a bent-up shank portion with hookedend to engage the locking lever, the connect ing bend of said shank portion With the base-plate being set in from the outer edge of the base plate.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature, in the presence of two Witnesses.
AMOS KISSINGER.
