E. S. CORY.
SASH FASTENEE.
No. 341,557. Patented May 11, 1886.
IIVVE/VTOI? MwuM/J/ e" By A iforney 5 ayya/r UNITED. STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDW'ARD S. CORY, Uh BIG RAPIDS, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO HERBERT, M. REYNOLDS, OF SAME PLACE.
SASH-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 341,557, dated May 11, 1886.
Application filed Julyifi, 1885. Serial No. 170,812. (X model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD S. CORY, a citizen of the United States, and aresident of the city of Big Rapids, in the county of Mecosta and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful \Vindow-Sash Holder and Look, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a window-sash fast- [0 ener and lock having a revolving bolt; and the object of my invention is to hold andlock the window-sash in any required position, the bolt acting both as a lock and as a sashholder, as fully described below. This oh- I 5 ject I accomplish by means of the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of my invention, with a section of the window frame with catches thereon, showing the window sash locked. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the bolt detached. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the device with the bolt turned so as to hold and lock the sash up. Fig. 4 is an end view of 2 5 the window-sash holder. Fig. 5 is a reverse view of the part shown in Fig. l, and Fig. 6 is a I plan view of the device with the bolt turned so as to lock the window-sash down.
Similar letters refer to similar parts through out the several views.
In the drawings, A A represent the metallic case or shell which holds the locking-bolt, and for strength, cheapness, and durability I make it of one piece of metal.
H represents the end of the lock-bolt which comes in contact with the stop or catch.
G represents the lock-bolt, having the head or enlarged portion H. In the head H is a bevel-groove.
J shows the bottom of the bevel-groove, and I I the flaring sides.
One end of the coil-spring M rests against the shoulder formed by the head H, and the other end of the coil-spring presses against the shell or case A, so that the bolt is pressed forward to engage with the stops or catches a a a. The stops or catches a a a are fastened to the Window frame or jamb E in any suitable manner, and the number will be varied to suit the size of the window.
The case A is provided with V shaped grooves, (shown by c e e,) with which the lever or thumb-piece C engages.
K K are the projections which form the V- shaped grooves. 5 F shows the attachment of the thumb-piece to the bolt.
0 c are lugs, which keep the thumb-piece from striking back against the window-sash.
b lll ifishows the hole for the reception of the When I use my invention to lock the window in any required position, I use the stops or catches a a a in pairs, as shown by a a in Fig. 1, and when it is used merely as a stop single catches are used. The support for theseeatehes is shown in the drawings by D, it being made of any suitable material.
The operation of my invention is as follows: The window being closed, the bolt is turned by lever G into the position shown by Fig. 3, the window-sash is raised, and the beveled groove J of the bolt G will drive the bolt back, so that it will readily pass by the catches a a a and rest on the top of any one of them, as shown in Fig. 3. By reversing the bolt, as shown in Fig. 6, the beveled groove J will come in contact with the upper side of the catches, driving the bolt back, so that it will readily pass by and lock the window when the lower catch is passed.
When my invention is used as a lock to lock the window in any required position, the
ment the window-sash is looked between any two of the series of catches a a, and secures the window at any desired point.
Having" thus described my invention, what I claim to have invented, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a window-sash stop and lock, the bolt 5 G, provided with the beveled groove J, in
grooves or notches e 0 e constructed, as shown, TO to retain the bolt in the desired position, in combination with the bolt G. provided with the leverO, the spring M, and the catch a, all substantially as described.
combination with the pair of stops or catches EDWARD F. CORY, a a, for stopping and locking the sash, sub- V'htnesses: stantially as described. J. H. MEYARGILL,
2. The case A, provided with the V-shaped H. E. HARDY.
