Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 23, 1909.
Application filed January 11, 1909. Serial No. 471,633.
To all whom it may concern: i
Be it known that I, CI-IARLEY B. KILBY, a
citizen of the United States, residing at ranged flatwise, or in the form of an ordi-' nary envelop, distended into box-like form, or distended into semiboX-like form without structural change or the disconnecting of any ofthe parts.
lVith this and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claims, and in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention, Figure l is a view of the blank from which the envelop is constructed. Fig. 2 is a view of the envelop arranged in flatwise form. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a view of the envelop arranged in semiboX-like form. Fig. 5 is an end view of the envelop arranged as shown in Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a view of the envelop'arranged in box-like form. Fig. 7 is an end view of the envelop arranged as shown in Fig. 6.
The improved envelop may be formed of any required size or of any suitable material, and it is not, desired therefore to limit the invention to any particular size or proportions, or to any specific material.
The improved device is formed from the blank shown in Fig. 1 and comprises a body 10 having end flaps 11-12, a back flap 13 and a closure orsealing flap 14.
Between the body 10 and the end flaps 11l2 and between the back flap 13and the closure flap 14: are intermediate portions 151617-18. These intermediate portions are defined from the body portions and the flaps by folding creases indicated by dotted lines 20, while the intermediate portions 15-16 are also provided with diagonal folding creases indicated at 2122.
Projecting from the end of the intermediate portion 15 nearest to the back flap 18 is a small tongue 23 separated from the back flap 18 by a cleft 2 1, while a similar tongue 25 extends from the corresponding end of the intermediate portion 16 and separated from the back flap 13 by a cleft 2s. The tongues 2325 are defined from the intermediate portions 1516 by folding creases indicated respectively at 27-28..
With a blank thus formed, if itis desired to produce a folded envelop substantially of ordinary construction, the tongues 2325 are folded inwardly upon the intermediate portions 1516 and the end flaps and their associated intermediate portions are folded inwardly upon the body 10, and the back flap 13 together with its intermediate portion 17 folded upon the folded end flaps and the closure flap 14. with its intermediate portion 18 folded upon the folded end flaps and upon the point portion of the back flap, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. By this means an envelop of ordinary form is produced, as will be obvious.
If it is desired to arrange the envelop in box-like form, as shown in Figs. 6 and 7, the end flaps together with their intermediate portions 1516 are folded at right angles to the body, and the back flap 13 together with its intermediate portion 18 also folded at right angles to the body, this operation locating the tongues 2325 in position to be secured against the intermediate portion 18 by pasting or otherwise. The free portions of the end flaps are then folded inwardly with their terminals overlapping and pasted together, and the free portion of the back flap folded over upon the folded end flaps "and the free portion of the closure flap folded upon the folded end flaps, as shown in Figs. 6 and 7. By this means the envelop is arranged in box-like form, as will be obvious.
If it is desired to fold the envelop in semibOX-llkG' form as shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the end flaps and back flap are arranged as above described for producing the box-like form, with the end flaps folded inwardly along the diagonal folding creases 2122,
which will bring the portions of the end flaps neXt to the closure flap close to the body 10, but with the opposite ends of the portions 1516 spaced away from the body a distance equal to the width of the tongues 2325, as will be obvious, thus producing an envelop in the form shown in Fig. 5, or with the sides converging toward the closure fla f he end flap 11 and the back flap l3 and closure flap let will be provided respectively with mucilage or like adhesive substance or material indicated at 2930 31, to provide means for securing the envelop in folded position. The tongues 2325 may also be provided with adhesive material if required. By this means it will be obvious that a simply constructed envelop is produced which may be folded in any one of three ways, without structural changes in the device or detaching any of its parts.
The envelop may be constructed without additional expense over that of an ordinary envelop as no more material is required for producing it.
WVhat is claimed, is
An envelop comprising a body having end flaps and with a back flap and a closure flap extending respectively from the side edges, the various flaps having intermediate portions between them and the body portion and defined therefrom by folding creases and with the intermediate portions between the end flaps and body each provided with a diagonal folding crease and a foldable tongue projecting from one end, whereby, an envelop having a flat form, a box-like, or a semiboX-like form may be produced without structural change or disconnecting any of the parts.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
