Be it known that I, JOHN W. Gann, a citi- Zen of the United. States, residing at l3=raddock, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safetydnvelops, of which the following is a specification, referH ence being had to the accompanying` drawings.
l.`h.is invention relatos to improvements in safety envelope of that class having specially constructed sealing devices, whereby the envelops cannot be opened without rendering detection possible.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and practical safety envelop which may be produced at a small cost and which. when sealed cannot be opened without so mutilating it that the receiver' will linow that the letter has been tampered with.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a plan view of the blanlr from which the improved envelop is made; Fig. 2 is a view of the envelop partially made up and ready for use Fig. 3 is a view of the envelop closed and sealed; Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section taken on the plane indicated by the line li-l in Fig. 3; and Figs. 5 and 6 are transverse sections taken, respectively, on the planes indicated by the lines 5-5 in Fig. 2 and 6 6 in Fig. 8.
The improved safety envelop is formed from a single blank shown in Fig. `l and com prising a front body member l and a rear body member 2 adapted to be folded over on. the member l along the dotted line 3. Said members are of the same size and preferably rectangular in shape, as shown. Upon the upper and lower longitudinal edges of the V member 2 are formed large rectangular flaps 4E., 5 each of which is approximately half the size of the member 2 so that when they are folded. over upon the latter along the dotted lines 6, said parts 2, 4, 5 will form a pocket or compartment 7 for the reception of the contents of the envelop. vt/"hen the ilaps il, 5 are folded over, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, they are held in such position by a transverse end liap formed at the free end of the member 2 and adapted to be folded over along the dotted line 8 and to be gummed to the flaps l, 5. lllie flap 7 has its inner face covered with adhesive material and adjacent its ends it is slit transverse y a number of times to provide se iai-atc tongues ll.

To further secure the member 2 in its folded position on the member l, adhesive material 16 is placed upon one end of the outer face of the upper flap l so as te cause said flap to be gummed to the inner face of the member 1. (ln the bottom edge of the member l is a triangular sealing flap 1 7 adapted to be folded over along the dotted line i8 upon the outer face of the member 2 and the llap l2, said llap 17 having its free edges gummed, as shown at 19. Upon the upper and outer edge of the member l is a triangul:i1-shaped sealing flap 20 adapted to be folded. over along the dotted line 2i and having its free edges provided with adhesive material 22 so that it can be gummcd to the flap 7 and the exposed portions of the llap 'l2 and member 2, as will be understood upon reference to Fig. 3 of the (,lrawings.
ln using the envelop, the letter or other contents is placed in the pocket 7 or beneath the flaps 4l, 5, the adhesive material at points 15, 16 is moistencd and the member 2 then folded over upon the member l.Y 'lfhe end flap l2 is then gummed to the member 2 and the bottom and top flaps 1 7, 2O are then successively gummed to said folded parts to produce the sealed envelop shown in Fig.
From the foregoing it will be seen that it will be impossible to reach the contents of the envelop when the latterI has been properly sealed, without rendering detection possible. To reach the contents of the envelop, it is necessary to open the flaps 20, 17, 12 and to then separate the members l, 2. lt will be practically impossible to loosen the flaps 20, 17, l2 without so dis'guring or mutilating the envelop as to indicate that the same has been tampered with, and it will be impossible to separate the member 2 from thev member 1 without rendering detection possible since the adhesive material 16 effectively holds the member 2 to the member l at one end of said members while the adhesive material 15 accomplishes the same purpose at the other end of the envelop. The provision of the tongues 11 and their gummed connection with both the flaps 4, 5 and the member 1 renders it impossible to separate the members 1, 2 without mutilating said tongues and thereby making it evident that the envelop has been tampered with.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed is:
1. A safety envelop comprising` front and rear body members to be folded upon each other, the rear body member having a pocket to receive the contents of the envelop and formed by folded flaps gummed to each other, one of said flaps being slit to provide tongues, means for gumming the slit or tongue portion of the last mentioned flap to the front body member and sealing flaps upon the front body member to be gummed to the outer face of the rear body member.
2. A safety envelop comprising front and rear body'members to be folded together, upper and lower flaps on the rear body member to be folded upon the same, a gummed end flap on the rear body member having its ends slit to form tongues, said end flap being adapted to unite said upper and lower flaps to form a contents receiving pocket upon the rear body member, adhesive material upon the inner face of the front body member to be engaged by said end flap, adhesive ma terial upon the outer face of the upper flap on the rear body member to engage the inner face of the front body member and gummed flaps upon the top, bottom and end of the front body member and adapted to be folded upon each other and the rear body member, substantially as described.
