DISPLAY APPARATUS.
, Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 27, 190 9.
I Application filed May 10, 1909. Serial No. 495,169.
To aZl who-ni. it may concern:
Be it knownthat we, JACOB M. KAU'rMAr v struction of an apparatus of this character by which merchandise may be exhibited in such a manner that each article of such Inerchandise will be exposed to view and will be conveniently accessible.
With these and other objects in view our invention consists in certain constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts the preferred form of which will be first described in connection with the accompanying drawin s and then theinvention particularlypolnted out in the appended claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings wherein the same reference numeral denotes the same .partwherever it occurs, Figure l is a perspective view of the preferred embodiment of our invention; Fig. .2 is a plan view thereof; Fig. 3 is a section on line 22 of Fig. 2; Fig. 41 is a-section on line 4, 4 of Fig. 2; Fi 5 is .a perspective view of the preferred form of hanger when the device is used .in displaying coats.
the particular construction by which we have illustrated our invention 6, 6 designate a pair of upright pillars on which is mounted a longitudinal supporting bar 7 and, as shown, this bar is provided adjacent each end with a longitudinal slot 8 in each of which is mounted a stud 9. the stud being provided with a shoulderlO and nut 11, whereby the studs may be adjustably secured in said slots. It is to be observed however that the particular form of such adjusting means is not material.
12 are a pair of wheels one mounted on each of the studs 9, said wheels being preferably provided with the projecting spurs 13, adapted to enter openings 14 in an endless band 15 formed of steel or other desired material. This band in its lower edge is provided with means to which hooks or other suitable form of hangers 16 may be secured, said means bein shown 'as openings 17. In order to drive said band for the purpose of rotating the same and bring ing the articles supported-thereon around we orovide a suitable driving mechanism which, in the form shown, is supported upon a crossbar 18 extending transversely across the central portion of the bar 7. This bar is shown as secured in position by apost 19, and 20 is a bar supported on the upper portion ofthe post 19 and extending parallel to the bar 18.
Between the bars 18 and 20 are journaled the driving wheel 21 and the idler 22. Each of these wheels preferably, and as shown, is
provided with. spurs 23 adapted to engage the openings 14 in the band 15. In order to hold the openings 14 in engagement with the spurs 23 I provide at each end of the bar 20 cross arms 24 on which are rotatably mounted the idler rolls 25 which run in contact with the outer face pf the band. In order to operate the driving wheel 21 we have shown a bevel gear 26 mounted upon the upper end of the shaft 27 of said wheel, said gear being engaged by .the bevel gear 28 mounted upon the drive shaft 29 rotatably journaled in a pair of brackets 30. The shaft 29 may be driven by any desired means or in any desired way, and for the sake of illustrating one driving means for said shaft we have shown the same as provided with. an operating handle 31.
In order to protect goods carried by our invention from dust we have shown the pillars 6,6 as mounted upon'a base 32 surrounded by :a glass casing 33, the back of said casing being provided with a sliding door 34 to give access to the interior thereof.
In Fig. 5 we have illustrated our preferred form of coat hanger 16 and, referring particularly to said figure, said hanger comprises a portion 35 upon which the shoulders of the coat rest with the upwardly projecting portion 36, said portion terminating in a hook 37 extending at right an.- gles to the portion 36.
38 is a'spring secured to the side of the portion 36 and adapted to extend under the hook 37, so that said spring rests against the side of the band 15 when the hook is inserted through an opening 17. It will be understood however that other forms of coat supporting devices may be used, and where the apparatus is used to display other goods other suitable forms of supporting devices may be substituted for that illustrated.
In the form of our invention shown we description taken in connection with the rawings it is believed that the operation of our apparatus will be.
apparent, and froinwhich it will be seen that a laigemumber of articles, such for instance as suits may be stored in a comparatively small space without danger of their being mussed, and that any of the articles, such for instance as a suit, maybe brought around for the purpose of displaying the same to a customer, and that any of the articles may be readily removed when desired. In addition. by continuously driving the endless supporting carrier and placing the apparatus in a permanent position, such for instance as a show window, or the front of a store, a very attractive display for the purpose of calling attention to the goods may be made.
We realize that considerable variation i possible inthe details of construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of our invention, and we therefore do not intend to limit ourselves to the specific form shown and described,
Having thus described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a display apparatus the combination with a pair of wheels supported in horizontal position in line with each other, a single endless band running around the wheels, co-
operating means on the band and wheels for retaining the band in position on the wheels, with its lower edge extending below the lower surface of the wheels, the portion of the band below the wheels being provided with means whereby articles may be suspended therefrom.
2. In a display apparatus the combination with a pair of wheels supported in horizontal position in line with each other, said wheels being provided on their periphery with spurs, a single endless band runnin; around the wheels, said band being provided with openings adapted to be engaged by the spurs to support the band in position on the cameo wheels with its lower edge below the lower surface of the wheels, the portion of the band below the wheels being provided with means whereby articles may be suspended therefrom.
3. In a display apparatus the combination with a pair of wheels supported in horizontal position in line with each other, a single endless band running around the wheels, cooperating incans on the wheels and band whereby the band will be supported on the wheels with its lower edge below the lower surface of the wheels, the portion of the band below the wheels being provided with a series of openings in which article supports are adapted to be suspended.
4. In a display apparatus the combination with a pair of wheels supported in horizontal position in line with each other, an endless band running around said wheels, a second pair of wheels mounted intermediate said first mentioned wheels, one of said last mentioned wheels engaging one run of said band and the other the other run thereof, and means for driving one of said last mentioned wheels.
5. in a display apparatus the combination with a pair of wheels supported in horizontal position in line with each other, an endless band running around said wheels, a second pair of wheels mounted intermediate said first mentioned wheels, one of said last mentioned wheels engaging one run of said band and the other the other run thereof, and means for driving one of said. last mentioned whee-ls, spurs on the periphery of'each of said wheels, said band being provided with openings with which said spurs engage.
(i. In a display apparatus the combination with a pair of wheels supported in horizontal position in line with each other, an endless band running around said wheels, a second pair of wheels mounted intermediate said first mentioned wheels, one of said last mentioned wheels engaging one run of said band the other the other run thereof, means for driving one of said last mentioned wheels, and idler rolls adapted to engage the band on the opposite sides of the band from that engaged by the second mentioned pair of rolls. In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
