IMPROVEMENT IN TAGS.

To all whom tt may concern.-

Be it known that I, T. J. SoUTHWonrH, f Rochester, in the county of Monroe, and State ofNeW York,

have inventeda certain new and useful, Improvement' inthe Manufacture of APaper for Label-Tags; and I do rhereby declare that the following isAv a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making part of this specification, in whic Figure l represents the sheets from which I out my improved'tags, the red lines indicating the outlines of the latter.

The nature of my improvement consists in thickening the material, during the process of manufacture, across one end of a label-tag, so that the eye which receives the cord or wire may not vloe easily torn out.

To enable others to make and use my invention, I will describe it.

I make my improved tag of water-proof paper 0i' other material in common use for such purpose, and across the punched end I increase the thickness of the fabric, as shown at a., tig. 3, to a width that will give suihcient strength around the eye.

This additional thickness is lgiven tothe paper in the process of manufacture, by' providing the rollers of the paper-train with groovesof proper width and depth, and increasing the quantity of pulp at these points, whereby sheets may be produced of any desired size and form, after which the tags may be cut out and punched at one operation.

The sheets -may be of a width indicated ing. 1, or v they may be of double that width, having the thickened portion on each edge, or they may be made in larger sheets, composed of several strips, having-the thin edge of one contiguous to the thick edge of the next.

The advantages of my improvement are, great strength, since the eye cannot be torn away without separating the tag entirely across itswidth, and cheapness of manufacture, as after the sheets are'formed bythe process described, the labor is reduced to a single manipulation of thematerial; Y

WVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

As' an improved article of manufacture, a label-tag,

composed of paper having an increased thickness of material across one end, which increase'is formed in the manufacture of the paper, asset forth.
