GARMENT MEASURING AND DRAFTING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 31, 1907.
Application filed May 16,1907. Serial No. 373,889.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARIE C. PELToN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Beatrice, in the county of Gage and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and useful Garment Measuring and Drafting Device, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to garment measuring and drafting devices.
The object of the invention is to facilitate the measuring and fitting of different garments of female attire and to enable persons unacquainted with the methods usually adopted by professional tailors, and with but little practice, to become proficient in accurately drafting and fitting any garment which it is desired to have made.
Vith the above and other objects in view as will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists, generally stated, in an article of the class described comprising a combined curve and square, the curve being of a character to plat any line that may be employed in drafting a pattern. The members of the implement are graduated into inches and fractional parts thereof, and in addition, on the curve there are employed, in conjunction with the inch graduation marks, letters or other suitable designating symbols to indicate the points at which to start in making different curves. There is further provided means to indicate which edge of the curve to use in making inward curves and which to use in making outward curves, a star figure being employed for the former purpose and a diamond figure for the latter,
The invention consists further in various features of novelty of a garment measuring and drafting device as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, and in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts,Figure 1 is a view in plan of the implement, a portion of the blade thereof being exhibited as folded upon itself to eX- pose the side opposite that shown in the remaining portion of the figure. Fig. 2 is a view of the implement taken from the opposite side of that shown in Fig. 1.
The implement comprises a square embodying a blade 1 and a tongue 2, and a curve 3 connecting the tongue and the blade. The curve is shown as outwardly bulged relatively to the blade and is irregular in outline, thus to adapt it for making any character of curved line that may be required in drafting a pattern.
As clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2 both the square and the curve are divided on both sides into inches and fractional parts thereof, and in addition the curve is provided, preferably at the inch graduation marks with designating symbols to indicate at what points to start in making different curves, the symbols herein employed being letters of the alphabet running from A to T. The letters from A to N are disposed contiguous to the inner edge of the curve, and the letters 0 to Q on the outer edge thereof, the remaining letters from R to T being disposed on the inner edge of the blade. This arrangement of letters is observed on both sides of the implement; but to avoid confusion, owing to the smallness of the scale on which they would have to be made, the letters A to N are omitted on Fig. 2. In addition to these symbols the curve is provided with means to indicate which edge to use in making inward curves and which to use in making outward curves, a star, 4, Fig. 1, being herein shown for the former purpose and a diamond, 5, Fig. 2, for the latter purpose. It is to be understood that there is to be a star and diamond on each side of the implement, but in the present instance only one of each of the symbols is shown.
It will be seen from the foregoing description that the employment of the implement herein described is simple in character and will be thoroughly efficient for the purposes designed.
' The implement may be made of any suitable material, such as built-up wooden stock or heavy pasteboard or any other substance adapted for the purpose.
What is claimed is A garment measuring and drafting device embodying a graduated square and a grad uated irregular curve connecting the tongue and the blade of the square and spaced throughout the length of its inner edge from the blade, and bearing on its inner and outer edges symbols to indicate points at which my own, I have hereto aflixed my signature different eurvesare to start, and having on in the presence of two witnesses.
its opposite sides means to indicate which edge of the implement is to be used in making MARIE PELTON' 5 inward curves and which to be used in mak- Witnesses:
ing outward curves. E. O. KRETSINGER,
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as GENEVIEVE LUNBEOK.
