JOSEPH HAV'ENDER, OF SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
PATTERN FOR CUTTING CONICAL SKIRT-BANDS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 460,132, dated September 29, 1891.
Application filed May 19, 1890.
To all whom it may concern:
field, Hampden county, State of Massachu-' setts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Patterns or Devices for Cutting Conical Skirt-Bands, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and letters and figures of reference marked thereon, in which drawings like letters and figures of reference indicate like parts.
Figure 1 is a plan view of my device, and Figs. 2 and 3 are edge and side views of the trammel or marking-guide.
In detail, a indicates the plate or pattern; b,-the trammel or guide; 0 d e f, corners of the plate, and g h 2' j k slots in the plate.
The object of my invention is to provide a device by the employment of which a conical skirt-hand maybe easily and readily laid out and out of any desired size, so that having the waist measure given the dress-maker can readily lay out the requisite curvature,- length, and angles on which the material to form the skirt-band is to be out.
My invention consists in the construction and arrangement herein shown, whereby the objects of my invention are attained.
The plate or pattern is preferably con; structed of thin sheet metal, though it may be made of pasteboard or other material, if desired. The plate illustrated is adapted for use in cutting bands varying between twentyone and thirty-five inches waist measure.
In the use of the device the operation is as follows: If, for instance, a Waistband is de sired, the waist measure being twenty-six, I first fold the cloth, then place the outer edge 0 ("Z of the device parallel with and directly above the fold, then with the pencil follow the edge 26, marking it upon the cloth. This gives the inner or smaller curvature of the band. Then insert the device and lay it upon the cloth in such position that the edge of the line marked 26 lies parallel with and on the line first marked on the cloth, the edge 0 cl being at the end or starting-pointt'. e., farthest from the fold. Then follow the outer edge 0 (l with the pencil, marking on the cloth. This gives the line governing the length and the angle Serial No. 352,307. (No model.)
on which it should be cut. Then to get the outer curve, place the device upon the cloth in the first position, and with the inner face of the trammel follow the edge 26, at the same time bearing the free or outer edge of the trammel (which is provided with a pencil) toward the cloth, thus striking a line parallel with the inner circle. The lines thus drawn will intercept and give the outline on which the folded cloth should be cut to give a band of the desired length and curvature when the two ends are united with buttons or hooks and eyes in the usual manner.
If a band of twenty-one inches measure is desired, the first line is started at the point marked 21, and the remainder of the proceedings are the same as first described.
If a band of from thirty-two to thirty-five size is desired the first or smaller curved line is made by following the outer edge of the device, carrying the line from the point marked the desired length to the fold. The device is then raised and the corner 0 is placed on the line first made, the corner 6 being placed on said line at the starting-point. A line then drawn on the edge e to f will give the radiating line of the larger size or sizes from which the inner or smaller curve is made by the employment of the outer curve or edge of the device. The folded cloth is then cut on the three lines thus formed and fastening means attached, as first described.
The trammel b is provided with an opening, preferably consisting of a V-shaped notch, to receive the pencil-point-, and the opposite end is provided with a downwardly and outwardly projecting part m n, the inner face of the part m of which is placed against the outer edge of the slots in the tracing of the outer curve, when the outer edges of the slots are followed in forming the smaller curved line of the band, and the outer face (a face farthest from the pencil) of the part m is placed against the inner or smaller curve of the slot, when the smaller curve of the slot is employed in tracing the smaller curve of the band. The part we is also projected or slanted slightly towardthe pencil end of the trammel to facilitate its remaining in position against the edge being followed, andthe part n is bent away from the pencil end for the same purpose-to wit, to prevent the trammel slipwhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As an improved article of manufacture, a Waistbandpattern consisting of a segmental plate a, the outer curved edges of which are parallel, said plate being formed with a series of parallel slots widened or flaring at one end, 20
substantially as described.
