nocnfoz WILLIAM H. EMMERT, OF SEWICKLEY, PENNSYLVANIA.
ELASTIC CUFF AND SLEEVE PROTECTOR.
: Specification of Letters Patent.
, Patented June 8', 1909.
Application filed February 27, 1909. Serial No. 480,448.
To all whomz't may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM H. EMMERT, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Sewickley, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Elastic Cuff and Sleeve Protectors, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to an elastic cuff and sleeve protector, and the invention has for its object to provide a sanitary protector that can be easily placed over a cuff and sleeve to protect the same while the hands are being washed, or used in performing unclean work, and for protecting the culf and sleeve when the forearm rests upon a table or similar support, as when Writing. I attain the above object by providing a thin rubber sleevelet, having the ends thereof reinforced, and shaped to frictionally engage the wrist and the sleeve, or the cuff of the sleeve, or to "engage a detachable cuff intermediate the reinforced gripping ends of the sleevelet and rotect the'same.
The sleeve and on scribed, is particularly designed for use in wash rooms and toilets and is adapted to be suspended adj acent to a wash. basin, whereby a pair of protectors can be easily slipped upon the forearm by a person not desiring or having time to remove a coat or detachable cuifs.
The detail construction entering into my invention will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and reference will now be had to the drawings, wherein a preferredembodiment of the invention has been shown, but it is to be understood that the detail construction of the protector can be varied or changed without departing from the spirit 1 or scope of the invention.
Inthe drawings,.Figure 1 is an elevation of the cufi and sleeve protector constructed in accordance with my invention, showing the manner in which the same is placed on the arm, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same.
Thereference numeral 1 designates a protector as above. de-
tapering sleeve made of rubber or a similar elastic water proof. material. The smaller end of said sleeve is contracted or flanged inwardly, as at 2, and then outwardly to form ,a wristlet 3, having a reinforced edge formed by providing the wristlet with a peripheral bead 4. The large end of the sleeve 1 is contracted to form an annular interior gripping portion 5, and is flared, as at 6, whereby the hand can be easily inserted in the sleeve 1, and suflicient room provided for a portion of a coat or shirt sleeve 7. The end of the flared portion 6 of the sleeve 1 is reinforced by a head 8 and this flared end is provided with an apertured tab 9 to permit of the sleeve 1 being suspended from a nail, hook, or similar support.
The wristlet 3 is adapted to frictionally engage the wrist 10 of the forearm and prevent water or other matter from entering the sleeve 1 and wetting or injuring the cuff of the coat 'or shirt sleeve 11.
A pair of the sleeve or cuff protectors can be advantageously used by surgeons, nurses, or persons performing operations that would soil the coat or shirt sleeves, and it also acts to hold the coat and shirt sleeve out of the way so as not to interfere with such opera-' tions. The protectors can also be used by house-wives, cooks. and persons engaged about housework, and the invention is not limited to any of the uses herein specified.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, is
1. As a new article of manufacture, an elastic cuff and sleeve protector, comprising a tapering elastic sleeve having the smaller end thereof contracted to form a reinforced wristlet and the opposite end thereof contracted to provide a griplpin portion having a diameter less than t e diameter of the sleeve at the larger end thereof, said sleeve provided at its larger end with a flaring portion of greater diameter than the sleeve.
2. As a new .article of manufacture, an
' walls of the sleeve proper and having a perforated tab, the said sleeve at the larger end thereof'having an inwardly extending annular gripping portion of less diameter than 5 the diameter of the-larger end of the sleeve.
3. A cuff and sleeve protector, comprising an elastic tapering sleeve, a reinforced Wristlet carried by one end thereof, and the opposite end of said sleeve contracted to form a gripping portion. 1 3
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
WILLIAM H. EMMERT. Witnesses: v
