Inventor Witnesses I I v Ill L I neat seat ELTJAH 'HUMPIIREYS, CF .SAMSVILLE, ILLINOIS.
Letters Patent No. 92,451, dated July 13, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN FENCE-GATE POST.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELIJAH HUMPHREYS, of Samsville, in the county of Edwards, and State of Illinois, have, as Ibelie've, invented a new and useful Improve-. ment in Fence-Gate Posts; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the drawings that aecompany and form a part of these specifications.
Figure 1 is a front-view elevation on a line.
Figure 2, side view, with gate attached.
Letter A, upright post which sustainsthe gate.p
Letter B, bed-piece, in which rests the lower end of the post A, and lower inner end of the gate.
Letters G O, lateral braces for the post A, one on each side.
Letter D, brace or anchor-bar, from near the top of. post Ato the ground, at Id, v j
Letter E, a short brace, acting to prevent the bedpiece from being thrown back by the weight of the gate.
Letter F, the firm ground, where rests the lower end of the brace D, and should be as far from the base of post A as the height of said post, and, if the surroundings are such as to allow, may be much further.
g, a strong pin through the brace D, at right angles to it, as seen in the drawings.
h It, two posts or stakes, of wood or stone; it of I wood, driven into the ground firmly; if of stone, may be driven in the ground, or be of sutlicient Tveight to perform their. office without, which office is to hold immovable the lower end of the brace D.
t 0', several holes'nearthe end of the brace D, which passes through a mortise, j, in the post A.
k,a pin, which may he placed in any one of the holes 1', to adjust the gate. g
l, a key for adjusting the brace E to its work.
an at, two keys, which, driven between the blocks h h and the pin g, provide a further adjustment of the gate, and one more readily applied, as it is accomplished simply by driving these keys down or up.
"he object of this invention is to provide a convenient gate-post, that shall not be constantly getting out of position by the action of frost, or the loosening effects of water in the soil; also, to provide for sustaining a gate-post at the spot desired, though there may be, at that place, obstructions to forming a post-hole.
From an examination of the drawings, one will see that,it' the gate should sag, or in case of snows, or when frost would forbid the adjustment of a post set i in the ground, any adjustment desirable may be readily and at once secured;
By pressing the upper end of the post A back, causing the bar D to extend further through the mortise j, the piii It may be so placed as to raise the outer end of the gate very'considerably from the ground;
and this might be very desirable in case of deep snows, and the gate could as readily be brought to its normal position, and at timeswhen the point at F might not .be accessible on. account of snow or ice. j
' This gate and post will be of great utility in use withia movable fence, as they can be drawn .bodily about the field.
This structure is such that small timbers will be sufl'lcient;
The dragging of the outer end, so destructive to a gate, need never occur with this device of mine.
Another great convenience is, that the gate may be set in place in early spring, before the. frost would be sufficiently out to allow a hole to be made in the ground. 4
That I claim as of myinvention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The brace D, provided with the gauge-holes t i, and auxiliary brace E, in combination with the post A, substantially as and for the purposes described and set forth.
2. The brace D, provided with the pin g, in combination with the blocks or posts h h and keys in m, as and for the purposes specified.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specificatiominthe presence of two subscribing witnesses. I
- ELIJAH I-IUMPHREYS.
