' IMPROVEMENTIN GLAMPIN G DEVICE.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Beit known that I, EDWIN KING, of Fredonia, in the State of New York, have invented-an improved Clamping Device for securing field-fence posts and trellis-poles' to 'stone foundations g and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, 'reference being had to the accompanying drawings,`
making a part of this specification, in which-f Y i y Figure 1 is a perspective view of a post for supporting the panels of common ldeld-feuces, provided with my clamp device for securing it to a boulder. t
Figures 2 and 3, front elevationand vertical section through line a b.
Figure 4, a perspective view of Va trellis-pole, provided with said ,clamp device, showing the I uannerrof` lowering the pole The same letters of reference indicating similar parts in all the figures. i
0n farm lands, in many sections of country, boulders and other stone are often found in great plenty, so l that they are frequently used for supporting fence-posts or the sills on which the posts stand.
The object of this invention is to supply a simple device by which the post itself `can beexpeditiously and thoroughly secured to such foundations, with but little outlay of time and money; and as a very large amount of posts are usually required in the fencing in of iields, it becomes au important object with the owner or occupier of the land that any device for the purpose should be at once cheap, simple, and Veilic'ient. These qualities, it is believed, can be realized more fully by this inveuton'thau by any of the methods now in use; 3 y i and should it be required to take up the posts for removal it will be seen, by inspecting the drawings, that itt,
can be very readily accomplished, In the case of trellis-poles for supporting grape-vines, as shown in fig. 4,
4the pole can be readily lowered to the ground so as to allow the vine to be covered up to protect it from frost. p
In some localities this is a necessity with vine-growers, and is therefore often practised. y
The following is a description of the construction and operation of my invention: A A', iig. l, is Va pair of clamps, of the angular form shown, the foot of each having a slit or notch, BB, and `bolt-holes C,`iig. 2on1 l 'the upright portion. The edges or corners of the said upright part are turnethas at VD. 0n the innerfuce of I each clamp is along knife-edge projection, E, igfZ, which cuts into a corresponding groove on each side of,`
the post F. The said clamps are fastened to the post by a bolt, D', passing fromone to the other, through the post. It will be seen thatthe turned edges D, and knife-edge projections E, secure the clampsvery firmly tof` y the post, so that they cannot easily become loose. The post is secured to the boulder -or other stone by means` of the nuts of the screw-bolts, which are leaded Ainto it, as seen in iig. 1. The posts can `be readily removed` from the stone, or thetrellisfpole lowered, by simply unscrewing the nuts, as seen in iig. 4.
I am aware that clamping devices, singly and in pairs, are in common use for various purposes; such, therel fore, I do not lay claim to, but I claim the improved construction and adaptation of my` said device to fieldt fence posts and trellis-poles, so as to operate in the mannershow, and as a cheap and eihcie'nt device for` the..
purpose stated.
What I claim, therefore, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
I claim the improved clamp A, provided with the return edges D D, knife-edge projectionyE,'sl`ot.B, bolt-` hole C, and bolt D', in combination with fence-posts and trellis-poles, so as to operate `in the manner substantially as herein specified and for the purpose set forth. i l l i EDWIN KING'.
Witnesses J.` F.- SINGLE,
M. S. HARVEY.
