IMPROVEMENT IN FENCE.

The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part ofl the same.

To all whom it may concern Be it known thatl, JAMES M. McKEn, of Mount Vernon, in the county of Knox, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful I m provem ent in Fences; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and 0peration of the same, reference being had to theaecompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a plan or top view of fence.

Figure 2 is an elevation.

Like letters, in both gures of the drawings, indicate like parts.

My invention consists in the manner of securing the rails to the posts by bolts and screw-nuts, the posts being of iron, and inserted in stone or wooden base blocks, in combination with the manner of bracing the posts by rods, the rods being so arranged, and connected in a line, with hooks cast with or attached to the posts, under the top rails, and with bolt-hooks att-ached to the centre of the bottom rails, between the posts, as that, when erecting the fence, or at any time thereafter, it should be necessary to stfgngthen the'tence, the said rods may be drawn tightlyfion by the bolt-hooks, through screw-nuts thereon, aud-thus give the body of the fence a rigid set, and, consequently, greater strength and durability; and, while this result is secured, at the same time,` the fence is rendered portable, the parts being easily put together, and taken apart, by removing the screw-nuts, and bolts, and rods from the hooks.

I construct my fence as follows:

A are the iron posts, inserted in wooden or stone base-blocks, a, and having holes in their upper and lower ends, to receive bolts b.

4B B are the rails, the ends of which are united by mitre-joints c, having square holes through the same, of the size of the posts, and also holes through .the sides, to receive bolts b.

The rails are secured to the posts by their mitred ends, being caused to lap one another around the same, when the bolts b are passed through the holes, aud the joints'then made tight by screw-nuts on the bolts.

C are the brace-rods, which are bent over in hooks cast with the posts, immediately under the top rails,

and then bent down to the centre ofthe bottom rails, between the posts, but suioiently above the top of the bottoni rails to allow the hooked bolts d (which are placed with their hooked ends over the bent of the rods, and then inserted through holes in the bottom rails,) to draw the rods tightly down to the' rails, as may be required, to strengthen and stiften the fence, by turning the screw-nuts on the bolts with a wrench.

D are the palings, which maybe of any style, shape, or size, and nailed or screwed to the rails, as maybe desired.

Having thus fully described my invention,
