Description
BENJAMIN LIVERMORE, OF HARTLAND, VERMONT.
INSTRUMENT FOR LASTING BOOTS.
Specification of Letters Patent N o. 9,216, dated August 24, 1852.
To all whom/15 may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN LivnRMoRE, of Hartland, in the county of Windsor and State of Vermont, have invented a new and useful Improvement on Instruments for Lasting Boots and Shoes, called the Lasting Instrument, and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to-the anneXed drawings, making a part of this speciiication, in which- Figure l, is a perspective view of the instrument. a a. a a are four arms hung at their upper ends on the nut g by the bolts b. 0 is a slot cut in the arms, a a a a through which the bolt CZ, passes. z' is a Standard the lower end` of which is intended to rest against the last and at its upper end reaches just above, and is pulled through by the bolt d. f is a screw the end of which is without a thread and enters and turns freely in the upper end of the standard e, as Shown at i, in Fig. 2. g is a nut through which the screw f passes and to which the arms a, a. a, a, are attached by the bolts b,
Fig. 2 represent the screw f, the nut g, and the standard e in their proper position without the arms a, a, a, a, attached to them.
Fig. 3 represents the form of one of the arms, and L is a hook or tooth with which the leather is held.
To operate the instrument I place the standard against the last and fasten the teeth h, it, L, h, to the edge of the upper of the boot or shoe, and by turning the screw f t-he proper way the arms a, a, a, a, are drawn upward and by the operation of the bolt CZ in the slot c the lower ends of the arms are drawn inward toward the standard e thus drawing the upper of the boot or shoe over the last.
I do not claim as my invention the Screw f, the standard e, the nut g, or the arms a, a, a, a, but
`What I do claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is The mode of bringing the arms together by the means of the slots in the arms, and the bolt operating in the slots when this is used in combination with the standard e substantially in the manner herein described.
BENJAMIN LIVERMORE.
