Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SARDIS THOMSON, OF HARTSVILLE, MASSACHUSETTS.
BO OT-J'ACK,
Specification of Letters Patent No. 8,865, dated April 6, 1852.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SABDIs THOMSON, of Hartsville, in the county of Berkshire and State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Boot-J ack; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, 1n which.
Figure l is a perspective view of the boot jack represented as in use in the operation. of pulling the boot olf, Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the jack placed in a position for the application of the foot when about to be operated, and Fig. 3 is a vertical section from front to back; the same letters having reference to like parts in all the gures.
The nature of my invention consists in the arrangement of a movable heel-gripper sliding in a stand connected with a toe stirrup and lever by a connecting rod, which stirrup when the foot is placed upon the stand is drawn over the toe by the lever, at the same time drawing the heel gripper forward, and crowding the foot forward in the stirrup, thereby conning the boot in the machine; and the back part of the stand is held by the other foot, and the forward part is held down by the hand on the lever handle, when the foot is drawn out of the boot.
The construction is as follows, A is the stand on which the foot is placed, B is the sliding heel gripper, which has play backward and forward in the slot C, the stirrup D extends below the stand forming in connection with the handle staif E a lever, having the fulcrum at F, and is connected with the heel gripper by the connecting rod G.
In operating the machine the lever is thrown forward at an angle of about sixty degrees more or less, as represented in Fig. 2 and one footis placed upon the stand and the other upon the projection H to hold the back *end down, and the front or toe part is held down by the hand on the lever, which when the foot is placed upon the stand is drawn back and places the stirrup over the toe, and at the same time crowding the foot forward by the heel gripper and the boot is held fast to be drawn 0H the foot.
It will be seen that the heel-gripper may be made static-nary and the connecting rod Gr dispensed with, and the foot placed upon the stand and drawn back against the heelgripper, and the stirrup operated as above described; but I prefer the movable gripper and connecting rod as making a more perfect apparatus.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new'and desire to secure by Let-l ters Patent, is-
l. The heel-gripper and stirrup in combination with the lever to draw the stirrup over and hold the toe of the boot, in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
2. I claim the movable heel-gripper in combination with the vconnecting rod and stirrup constructed and operating substantially the same as described and represented.
