To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAY CHAPIN, citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Filing-Folders, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to holders for retaining loose leaves, letters or papers and refers especially to attachments for folders or filing devices in sheet form.

The chief objects of the improvements which form the subject matter of this application are :to provide a retaining device of sim le construction that can be easily at tache to a sheet of card board, or heavy paper to furnish a paper clip that will securely hold loose sheets placed therein in an orderly manner and yet permit the papers to be readily inserted and withdrawn; and to provide a device for the purpose stated that will be applicable to filing sheets of dif ferent dimensions and that can be used with folders of well known forms, or constitute a complete filing folder in itself.

I accomplish the objects sought, by means of the devices illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this applica tion, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the preferred form of my improved paper filing device; Fig. 2 is a sectional view, enlarged, on the line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a perspective view, partly broken away, of a modified construction; Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line 44 of Fig. 3, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the inner surface of the form shown in Fig. 3, the flaps being more widely separated than in Fig. 3.

Referring to the details of the drawing, the numeral 6 indicates a sheet of heavy paper or light cardboard made of material suited for the purpose, and of any desired size and shape and forming the back or body of the filing device. For ordinary use an oblong form is to be preferred and this sheet is provided upon one end margin with an eXtension or flap 7, cut integral with the sheet and extending from one lateral margin to some point, 8, between the median line of the sheet and the other lateral margin. The flap 7 initially projects laterally beyond the line of the lateral edge of the sheet 6 forming an integral extension or ear 9. The flap 7 is then bent or folded forward at .the point 10, on a line with free adjacent margin 11 of the sheet 6, until it lies in apposition with the front surface of said sheet, as shown in Fig. 1. The ear 9 is then bent or folded around the lateral edge of the sheet 6 and secured to the back thereby by means of gum or other adhesive. The ear will afford sufficient support at the point where it is applied for the clip thus formed, but toward the opposite or free end of said flap the flexibility of the material will caiise the flap to spring away from the sheet 6, and thus tend to defeat the purpose of the device. To keep this free portion of the clip in closer proximity to the sheet and to reinforce its grip and at the same time add to the effectiveness of the clamping portion, a fiat spring 12 in the form of a strip or ribbon bent upon itself in the middle until the ends are closely approximated is inserted between the fiap 7 and the sheet 6 one portion of the spring being secured to the sheet and the other to the inner surface of the flap 7 as shown in the sectional view Fig. 2 by any suitable glue or adhesive. The said spring may be made of any width, but a comparatively narrow stri will answer the purpose, especially if it islocated in proximity to the free corner 8 of the cli In Figs. 3, 4 and 5 is illustrated a mo ified form of clip or holder which is made separate from the sheet 6 and adapted to be applied to any sheet as may be desired. The foundation of this form of clip is a strip of card board 13 or other suitable material having the requisite qualities of lightness and rigidity, to which is applied a covering of thinner paper or cloth 14, the latter being of double the width of the board 13 so that the covering projects at one side to form a flap 15. The said covering 14 projects at the end of the board or strip 13 forming an ear 16 similar to the ear 9 above described, and having the same function. The flap 15 is folded in a position with the reinforcing strip 13 and t e clamping member or spring 12 is employed as in the former case, one branch being inserted between the board 13 and the cover 14, where it is held securely, the said cover being securely gummed to the strip 13 by a suitable adhesive. The other branch of the spring is applied to the opposite flap 15 to which it is mly cemented. The entire inner surface of the said flap 15 is gummed as shown at 17 and a similar adhesive being also applied to the end flap 16.

The modified form (Fig. 3) is designed to be attached to a selected sheet of paper of suitable quality by a plying the moistened gummed surface 17 of the flap 15 to the rear face of the sheet near the upper left hand corner, and the ear 16 also moistened upon the gummed surface then folded around the side margins of the sheet and foundation strip and pasted to the back of the flap 15.

The two styles of holder will be used in the same manner by inserting one margin of the loose papers to be filed in the space between the sheet 6 and the flap above the face of said sheet, the said flap, reinforced by the spring 12 being sufficient to retain a variable number of loose leaves in position With sufficient pressure to prevent their becoming loosened by ordinary handling of the file or holder.

Having thus described my invention what I claim, is

1. In a loose leaf holder, the combination with a backing sheet, of a marginal flap arranged in apposition with the upper surface of said sheet, means for securing said flap to the sheet at one end, and a resilient clamping giember secured to the backing sheet and the a 5. In a loose leaf holder, the combination with a backing sheet, of a flap folded upon the face of the sheet, an ear extending from the flap and folded to engage the side margin of the sheet and secured to the back of the said sheet, a reinforcing strip placed beneath the said flan, and a clamping member secured to said badking sheet.

3. A loose leaf holder ada ted to be at tached to a filing device, said older consisting of a strip folded upon itself longitudinally, a reinforcing member applied to said strip and filing device, an ear projecting from said strip an adhesive applied to said strip, and a resilient clamping member secured to said strip.

4. In a filing device, a retaining member comprising a sheet of suitable resilient ma terlal adapted to embrace the articles to be filed, and a resilient metallic cli secured to said member and adapted to sti 'en the same and increase its grip on the articles embraced thereby.

5. In a filing device, a retaining member comprising a strip of suitable resilient material folded upon itself and having one end closed, and a resilient metallic clip secured to both branches of the folded strip and adapted to increase the grip of said strip on the articles embraced.

6. In a device for filing letters, a strip of suitable material folded upon itself longitudinally and having an adhesive on one of its surfaces, a metallic clip secured to said strip and adapted to facilitate the gripping qualities of said strip on letters embraced thereby.

7 In a letter filing device, a sheet of suitable material having a portion of its margin fold ed upon itself to form a gripping member, a reinforcing strip of stiffer material secured to the folded portion of said strip, and a metal clamping member adapted to facilitate the gripping qualities 'of said sheet and strip.

8. In a letter filing device, a strip of suitable material folded upon itself longitudinally and formed with an extension at one end, said extension and one branch of the folded strip having an adhesive applied thereto, and a stiffening member secured to said strip so as to be concealed thereby.
