Honolulu, Territory of Hawaii Application December 1, 1949, semina. 130,399 1 Claim. Y (Cl. 281-42) This invention relates to pass books, such `'as are used by savings andloan associations, banks and other nancial institutions for the entry of savings deposit orloan payment records. Books as now commonly employedfor this prise a plurality :of pages, all of equal area and divided into an upper space forthe reception of theV name, deposit number,fetc.,.of the depositor purpose com and lower spaces ruled Aand arranged in columns Y' vfor ythe reception of the amounts use of books ofthatsort it isnecessary to rewrite the name of the depositor, account number, etc., at the head of the page every time a fresh page is reached and this requires a great deal of work and time. By the present invention I contemplate the saving of viding a pass book comprising a first or master pages. The shorter'pa'ges are ruled to comprise columns for receiving the dates, amounts, etc., currently entered, while that portion of the first or master short pages is such indicia, the depositor', account number, amount of monthly payments, place of record of mortgage, amount of mortgage and in fact, any indiciaJ relating to that particular account and common to all of the pages of the book.
Now while the arrangement so far described is highly desirable, in that one entry of the permanent identifying data on the master page is common to all the pages and needs to be written only once, it is open to the objection that the if left free, would interere with the entry of the opened book into typewriting or posting machines, as has frequently to be done. Therefore I go further and provide means, Iwhich while leaving the permanent data visible, clips the short pages firmly against the master page and prevents them from being caught, torn, smudged or otherwise mutilated by f such machines.

a master sheet or leaf 6 enough shorter than the the top of the latter, an

This guard sheet is of such size that when bent for crimped over the top of the master sheet it `will provide a guard web 9a which substantially covers the area 8 and extends downwardly to a v point where its lower edge l@ engages over the upper edges of the shorter leaves to clip them against the master sheet and to vcover and protect the upper edge portions of saidshorter leaves for the purpose set forth. My invention relates particularly to this sheet like, transparent element 9,
shorter leaves 'i being already In the form of the invention illustrated in Figs. c
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing wherein:
Fig. l is a face view of a passbook 'embodying one form of the invention; v A
Y Fig. 2 is 'an enlarged vertical section through Fig.y 3 is a fragmentary elevation of a part of a cover of the book having leaf holding means attached thereto, as hereinafter described; and
Fig. 4 is a sectional view ofthe structure of Fig. 3.
In the drawing and referring particularly to Figs. l and 2, 5V designates the cover of the book disposed in the novel relation shown and vfor the purposes set forth, the book proper, consisting of the cover 5, the master sheet and the group of known to the art.
3 and 4 the guard web 9b is bent from a transparent plastic sheet, a portion of which is stitched at Il to the book cover indicated at l2. Thus it will be seen that in both of the illustrated forms the sheet of transparent material is secured to the cover so that the cover lprovides a point of support for said sheet. Also in each case the master sheet 6 lies between the downturned resilient guard web 9a, 9b and that portion of the Ytransparent; sheet which lies against the cover. As a result the upper part of the master sheet acts to press the upper part of the resilient sheet toward the cover and thus adds tothe effective action of the lower edge of the guard web in drawing the upper edges of the shorter leaves snugly against the master sheet. vAs will be seen froman inspection of Figs. 2 and 4 the plastic transparent sheets 9 are of relatively thin sheet like material of, substantially the same thickness lthroughoutso that they function as sheet like elements along with the other sheets and pages of the book when being passed into mechanical posting machines or typewriters. Y
rIfhe use of the pass books of this invention provided with the shorter interior pages saves considerable time, manual Work and delay in opening new pass book accounts, in that the name is bound along with the of the owner of the pass book or the account represented thereby, the passbook number, account number and other information or indicia required by the cashiers or tellers need be entered only on the first page, thus eliminating time consuming delay and work occasioned by entering the same information at the head of every page in the pass book, the shorter following pages permitting the information at the top of the first page to be visible at all times no matter at what page the pass book is opened. Further this arrangement assures the correct alignment of the book when the same is inserted in typewriters or posting machines. This alignment is facilitated by the fact that the matter in area 8 is always visible because of the transparent nature of the sheet.
I wish it to be understood that the invention is not limited to any particular way of holding the transparent sheet in place since it is apparent that any means for holding a transparent sheet in relation to the master sheet and dimensioned to extend down to and hold the shorter sheets as described, is within the scope of my invention.
Having described my invention what I claim is:
In combination with a pass book of the type comprising a cover, a master sheet lying next to the cover and a plurality of shorter sheets super.- posed upon the master sheet, said master sheet and said shorter sheets being secured to each other and to the cover in such relation that an area of the face of the master sheet is left uncovered by the shorter sheets for the reception of identifying data of the account to which the pass book relates, a web of transparent resilient material of relatively thin sheetlike form of substantially uniform thickness which is secured to the cover and which comprises a portion lying between the .cover and the rear face of the master sheet, extends forwardly over the upper edge of the master sheet and then downwardly over the uncovered portion of the face of the master sheet and terminates slightly below the upper edge of the shorter sheets, said terminal edge of the said resilient sheet tending by the inherent resiliency of said sheet to move the upper free edges of the shorter sheets toward the face of the master sheet.
