To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Bnssin IVIAY SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Sangamon and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Manicure Implement, of which the following is such a full, clear, and exact description as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use my said invention.

This invention relates primarily to means for supporting the arm of the person receiving manicure treatment in such position as to facilitate the treatment, but is equally applicable for other uses in which it is desired to maintain a fixed position of the arm and'hand, as for example in the fitting of gloves or the like.

The purposes of this invention are to provide a stationary support for the forearm and in connection therewith a flexible support for the wrist and hand; to provide means for retaining the flexible member in the desired position relative to the stationary member; to provide a support for the vessel containing water or other material employed in the treatment and to provide means for adjusting the vesselsupport relative to the hand-support.

With these ends in view my invention consists in the novel features of construction and combinations of parts, shown in the annexed drawings, to which reference is hereby made, and hereinafter particularly described and finally recited in the claim.

Referring to the drawings in which similar reference numerals designate like parts in the several views: Figure 1. is a perspective view of the implement. Fig. 2. is a vertical longitudinal section on the line 2. 2. of Fig. 1. and Fig. 3. is a vertical transverse section on the line 3. 3. of Fig. 1.

The implement is preferably made of cast iron, polished and plated, but any other suitable or convenient material may be used.

The standards 2 are integral with the base 1 and are separated by a space 2 accommodating the ratchet wheel i The member 3 has a concave upper surface adapted to fit the forearm and is suitably secured on the standard 2. The wrist support 4 is connected with the member 3 by a hinge l A spring 5 has one end secured on the under side of the member 3 and the free end of the spring bears against a pawl 6 mounted on and between the standards 2 and adapted to engage the teeth of the ratchet wheel 1. A handle 7 and the pawl 6 are both secured on a shaft 8 transverse to the standard 2. A vessel-support 9 has an annular part 9'- adapted to fit around a vessel placed on the support, it also has a longitudinal slot 9". A bolt 10 fixed on the base 1 extends through the slot 9 of the vessel-support 9 and has a nut 10 erving to clamp the vessel-support in any desired position on the standard. On the underside of the base 1 is secured a pad 1 of felt, rubber, or other material adapted to deaden sound and prevent the slipping of the implement.

In the practical use of the implement in fitting gloves or the like the forearm of the person who is being fitted will rest on the concave part of the member 3 and the wrist will lie on the concave part of the member 4, the hand projecting beyond the free end of the member 4 to such extent as may be most convenient for the manipulation of the glove. lVhen the implement is used for glove fitting, the vessel support may be removed.

Vihen the implement is used for manicure treatment a bowl or other suitable vessel containing the material used in the treatment will be placed within the ring of the part 9 The patients forearm will be placed on the concave part of the member 3, her wrist will rest on the concave part of the member 4 and her hand will project in a convenient position beyond the free end of the member 4. The vessel support will then be adjusted to bring the vessel directly under the hand of the patient and will be secured in position by tightening the nut 10 In order to raise or lower the hand the lever 7 will be used to withdraw the pawl 6 from the teeth 9 of the ratchet wheel 4 and the member 4 may then be turned on its hinge 4* until it is placed in the desired position, whereupon the pawl 6 acted upon by the spring 5 will engage with the teeth of the ratchet wheel to support the member 4 in any position in the teeth of the ratchet Wheel of the Wrist- 16 which it may be set. support and a spring acting on said pawl.
